Make a great a great Genesis Prog' album post Hackett !

Imagine living in a perfect prog world. Although Hackett still leaves Genesis, the band carry on making prog music !
The challenge is to take away the slush & syrup and make a great prog album from post Hackett releases. It was a struggle but I think I managed it ?

    -Deep in the Motherlode
    -Duke`s Travels
    -Duke's End
    -Abacab
    -Second Home by the Sea
    -Domino

I have never heard WCD but have heard that Driving the Last Spike is a proggy track ?

I'd add Dodo/Lurker, Fading Lights and Burning Rope.

My post was a statement that ATTWT is fine the way it is. The small amount of syrup doesn't bother me because the whole album IMO has aged well and developed a "patina" that serves it well. I dislike Your Own Special Way more than anything on ATTWT.

I *love* ATTWT, although I've never been able to get into "Ballad Of Big". Just one of those things, I guess. I think "Down And Out" is in my top 3 Genesis tracks of all time and there are many other excellent tracks on that album. To me, it sounds like no other Genesis album. It just has a whole other feel to it somehow. I know a lot of people don't care much for it, so I listen twice as much on their behalf.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Abacab(the title track). Sure it's been played a lot on rock radio but it's still very proggy. Also, I take it those who mentioned Domino are referring to the both parts? I really feel that Domino one and two represents the classic Genesis sound(albeit in a more modern way) as much as any other post Hackett track. OK, maybe there are a few others such as Fading lights or Dodo/lurker that come closer but not by much.

Yes, definitely both parts of "Domino", and I considered "Abacab" as well as several other strong contenders but mine was already passing the 80-minute mark.

If one listens to CAS as if it weren't Genesis & then compare it to many offerings by prog bands in the 90s and since, one realises that it is pretty close to a lot of 90s prog (Threshold, Arena) and is more of a prog and rock album than WCD.

Also, I've just realized one could also take rare post-Hackett tracks from the Archives albums.

Really? That song has a lot of mood to it, especially the chorus. I like it a whole lot better than 'Scenes From A Night's Dream', and while its no Burning Rope, it is one of my favorites from the album.

If there are any mediocre songs from ATTWT it would probably be "ballad of big." It's not really bad imo but it's probably the weakest link on the album.

Yeah, but the idea of the thread is to create an album of tracks that would have appeased fans who hated the direction Genesis took when Hackett left & avoided comments like 'And Then They Were shite ' 'Invisible Torture ','Abacrap' & 'Phil Collin's ruined Genesis '.

Well, if we're limiting this to just the "prog" pieces, I guess I'd go something like:

Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea
    Naminanu/Dodo/The Lurker/Submarine
    Me And Sarah Jane
    Domino
    Snowbound
    Duke's Travel's/Duke's End

Not sure what else I'd use. I'm not sure how long that track list is, but I reckon that's gotta be around an hour there, so I think that would make a good "Best of the non-singles" collection from the trio era.

I think I would replace the Duke Suite (keeping Man Of Our Times) with Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea, and Fading Lights with Mama. And Keep it dark with ABACAB. And -- wait wait:

    Down And Out
    Man Of Our Times
    Abacab
    Home By The Sea

    Turn It On Again
    Deep In The Motherlode
    Dodo/Lurker
    Silver Rainbow
    Mama

    Okay, how about a double?

    Side One

    Behind The Lines
    Duchess
    Guide Vocal
    You Might Recall
    Heathaze

    Side Two

    Naminanu
    Keep It Dark
    Me and Sarah Jane
    Home By The Sea
    Second Home By The Sea

    Side Three

    Do The Neurotic
    Burning Rope
    Living Forever
    Fading Lights

    Side Four

    Domino
    Evidence of Autumn
    Duke's Travels
    Duke's End

I kept it to the Phil Collins era, even though I like CAS better overall than WCD and perhaps 1 or 2 others. Wow so far, I'm the only one who has posted 'Evidence of Autumn' and 'Do The Neurotic'? I kind of think those are their closest to the Hackett era in terms of composition and class, but it goes to show how we all hear things differently.

Take ATTWT minus FMFY, MTM and Joe
Take Duke's flipside and add Heathaze, in place of TIOA

Bonus tracks for the 30th Anniv reissue:
    Abacab
    That's All
    Mama
    Home By The Sea
    Second Home By The Sea
    Land Of Confusion
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. ESPECIALLY for the inclusion of "Duchess".

Although it was maybe their first real transition into pop, Duke nonetheless may have been their last album to keep most of their "old" prog identity. Duchess is a great track. That one could almost have been a leftover from ATOTT or W&W.

I love it until the long jam at the end, which (for me) is about as interesting as watching grass grow.
