Nubya Garcia's new record is called Nubya's 5ive. It's got that Maisha groove right across it: https://nubyagarcia.bandcamp.com/album/nubyas-5ive

The first Ezra Collective outing starts with the wonderful "Enter the Jungle" - but their follow-up record, Juan Pablo: The Philosopher, is much more consistent, & a real step-up: https://ezracollective.bandcamp.com/...he-philosopher

    Nérija have released a self-titled ep: https://nerijamusic.bandcamp.com/

(ps - I really like Yazz Ahmed - her tone on her trumpet/cornet on last year's La Saboteuse is just gorgeous - & I think that the way she is blending Arabic & Middle Eastern melodies & rhythms into her jazz compositions is very exciting!)
Actually, Dinosaur was relatively disappointing as is their seond album, which is "too electronice" for my tastes.

Thanks for the BC links, I'll be surely listening.

As for Yazz Ahmed, I hope her next album will be as stunning as Saboteuse, both aurally and visually.

Some in this thread might be interested to know that, if you have access to Starz Retroplex through your provider, there's a 1943 movie in current rotation named Stormy Weather, which actually introduced the song.

With a completely African-American cast (Lena Horne, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, "Fats" Waller, Cab Calloway & his Cotton Club Orch., Katherine Dunham & her dance troupe, The Nicholas Bros. and Dooley Wilson of "Casablanca"), the music and dancing are awesome.

Totally mind-blowing array of talent on show here caught on a very good night - can't believe this was 33 years ago - saw them in Scotland the year before with Julian Priester on Trombone - this concert here has the lineup - Dave Holland-the much-missed Kenny Wheeler-Steve Coleman-Robin Eubanks and a very young Marvin Smitty Smith

Definitely a personal favorite - an excellent document of one of Holland's best bands. I still have this on VHS somewhere.

which album is that from, please?

    ================

Surprisingly 70's-sounding , that Holland Freiburg 86 concert... Very anti smooth-jazz that ruled supreme during the 80's.

    Hello Gang!.
As 2018 is coming to an end, "Nik Bärtsch's Ronin/Awase" is getting heavy rotation here at Casa Casanova: definitely, on my top 5 (Jazz) for this great 2018!.

I've got a Coltrane question, The Impulse box is OOP and while checking Discogs, I see two versions: one appears to be remastered and is priced higher. Has anyone heard this and is it worth the price?

Anyone know if El Grupo Live is any good? Some great talent on it. Steve Lukather on guitar & vocals, Joey Heredia on drums & purcussion, Steve Weingart on keys and Oskar Cartaya on bass.

Another good album by a great ensamble/big band:

    - Big Heart Machine - Same. (2018).
    https://bigheartmachine.bandcamp.com...-heart-machine

" … features a vast range of music that explores the intersection of jazz improvisation, contemporary composition, and heavy metal aesthetics."

    - Recommended!. -

    Personal notes:
    - Self-titled debut of Big Heart Machine.
    - Big-band jazz ensemble (19 participants including a conductor).
    - Eight labyrinthine tracks:
Highlight: "Tamalpais Suite": a five-part work that forms the centerpiece of the album. (IMO).
    - Really like the use of electric guitar!.

    Live:

    Regards.!

Totally unnoticed ... out of my radar:

Victor Assis Brasil – “Esperanto” / “Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim”
(2018, Far Out Recordings – Rough Trade)

    https://victorassisbrasil.bandcamp.c...o-carlos-jobim

“The CD is a double album release, containing both Esperanto and Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as two bonus tracks: previously unreleased alternative versions of ‘Marilia’ and ‘Ao Amigo Quartin’ ”.

    — Also available on vinyl LP each album.

“Gifted his first saxophone by his aunt at the age of fourteen, only four years later the inherently gifted and determined young musician Victor Assis Brasil recorded his debut album, with a second to follow only a year later. The prodigious young carioca was subsequently granted a place to study at Berklee College of Music, where he played alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Chick Corea and Ron Carter. It was also during this period he recorded Esperanto and Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim with Roberto Quartin, upon returning to Brazil in the summer of 1970.”

“Victor Assis Brasil passed away aged just thirty-five, due to a rare circulatory disease, but by this point his status was already cemented as one of the most talented musicians in Brazil’s history.”

    .— Recommended —.

I noticed the complete lack of discussion or mention of Ibrahim Maloufs new record 'levantine symphony no. 1'. He is one of the big names in European jazz right now and you woulde expect his new album would draw some attention. It is even his most 'proggy' album to date. A concept album even! That does not mean it is good. It is okay but still fairly disappointing. For me the most exiting moments are when he just plays jazz.

What do others think of this one? Trane?
