Sorry, Good Times was the first to come to mind, and I was trying to not overthink it. Then after I hit the post button, I realized I still left out Bootsy and Larry Graham. And I didn't even post any synth bass things.
What is Hip - Tower of Power
Rio - Duran Duran
Sunday Papers - Joe Jackson
Hot Water - Level 42
Date Rape - Sublime
Broken Hearts - Living Colour
"That gum you like is going to come back in style."
FZ - My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama, YCDTOSA VOL.4, Scott Thunes
JACK BRUCE : ROPE LADDER TO THE MOON - from "Songs For A Tailor"
RAY SHULMAN: WINNING - from Gentle Giant's "The Missing Piece"
BOB DRAKE: LYCANTHROPE - from Thinking Plague's "In This Life"
JOHN GREAVES: WAR - From Henry Cow's "In Praise Of Learning"
JOHN WETTON: READY TO GO - from Family's "Bandstand"
JOHN PAUL JONES: CAROUSELAMBRA - from Led Zeppelin's "In Through The Out Door". (sorry to reiterate this one from post no. 27, but it's truly bad-ass).
Pink Floyd - Hey You - the fretless part played by David Gilmour
Dave (in MA) points out that 'we' are choosing specific rather than random "bass parts I love"
I am giving what I feel are 'random' pieces of basswork found within a song - some piece that jumps out; the rest of the song may have 'expected' basswork
"Normal is just the average of extremes" - Gary Lessor
Then when one has to mention Pino Palladino's fretless bass work on Murder, on Gilmour's solo album About Face.
And then there's Tony Levin's fretless bass on On The Turning Away (at least, I assume it's Tony, his name appears in the credits, and it certainly sounds like something he'd play).
And that reminds me of the bass solo that Guy Pratt plays on the Delicate Sound Of Thunder version of One Slip (on the album it sounds like a Stick, again leading me to believe it was Levin again, and he really just repeats one riff several times, but when they played it live, Guy would sort of go bonkers on it)
And to bring this full circle, there's a bass line that David Gilmour played that I think was awesome, and that's One Of These Days (actually, the first section is Gilmour and Waters, in stereo, I forget who's on the left and who's on the right, but one of them starts on one side, then the other comes in on the other a couple bars later...I forget who is playing bass on the rest of the track).

Haha, hate to spoil the fun, but that was Maria Moran, using my bass and amp, and closely coached by me as she hadn't played bass before we recruited her for TP. If I recall, the only places I played bass on that album are The Fountain, Organism, and the choruses of The Guardian. I just wanted to be the drummer!
As for the original topic, holy smokes I wouldn't know where to begin, there are so many brilliant bass parts over the decades.
x
some pretty obvious ones
Ray Shulman...Who Do You Think You Are
Greg Lake...21st Century Schizoid Man
Chris Squire...Close to the Edge
Mike Rutherford...Battle of Epping Forest
John Paul Jones...Immigrant Song
STP...Plush
Well there are so many, especially among fusion artists. But these right off the top of my head:
Gentle Giant - Playing The Game (Ray Shulman)
Flower Kings - Rumble Fish Twist (Jonas Reingold)
Genesis - Los Endos (Mike Rutherford)
Café Jacques - Sands of Singapore (John G. Perry)
Iron Butterfly-Metamorphosis-Shady Lady. Pretty awesome bass riff. And I always liked Hotel California bass part. As long as we are recycling the past...
Ok, I'll play:
Ray Shulman - His Last Voyage
Klaus-Peter Matziol - Heartbeat
John Glascock - Journeyman
Joe Bouchard - The Subhuman (live)
Bootsy Collins - One Nation Under a Groove
Mike Rutherford - Robbery, Assault and Battery
'Good Times' was one of the first that came to my mind. James Jamerson's work on The Four Tops' 'Bernadette' is another.
'Long Distance Runaround' is perhaps my favourite by Squire. Terrific interplay with Bruford.
I love McCartney's work on the Sgt Pepper album but in particular 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds'.
I really like the bass lines on some of those old Gerry and the Pacemakers hits- 'How Do You Do It' and 'I'm The One' particularly! Les Chadwick was the player.
Yesterday I heard De Dijk - Nergens goed voor and I liked the bass-part. Not complicated, but I liked it:
Another bass-part I really love is Fischer Z - The worker, I also love the keyboard-sound on that album. Wonder what instrument they used.

“Pleasure and pain can be experienced simultaneously,” she said, gently massaging my back as we listened to her Coldplay CD.
