Dang. I cannot remember the Kansas song where Dave Hope has the little 'dah-dah-DAH-dah' part in it a couple of times ...

    Edit: Song for America

The bass playing on Lake's "The Final Curtain" is the first thing that came to mind.

The intro to "Eight Miles High." For originally a mandolin player, Chris Hillman was one heck of a bass player.

Looking forward to my day in court.

Jean Luc Ponty: In Spite Of All (American Idol's Randy Jackson)
The Who: Dreaming From The Waist (John Entwistle)
Uriah Heep: The Magician's Birthday itself (Gary Thain)
Chris Squire: Hold Out Your Hand (Chris Squire)
Rolling Stones: Start Me Up (Bill Wyman)
    Elements: Airial View (Mark Egan)

Damn, I should make room for some Chic in that list, shouldn't I? OK, swap out the Stones for Good Times, played by Bernard Edwards.

Area - L'elefante Bianco (Ares Tavolazzi ripping it up on fretless)

Gentle Giant - His Last Voyage (Ray Schulman with one of the sweetest Precision bass sounds ever, and amazing playing to go with it)

Kansas - Icarus or Song for America (Dave Hope with an amazing tone and amazing playing)

Jade Warrior - Night of the Shamen from Distant Echoes (Dave Strut killing on fretless bass)

Lift - Simplicity (the unheralded Cody Kelleher with some super tasty playing and getting a classic Rick sound on this punchy little rocker)

Goblin - Goblin from Roller, or really just about any track from Roller (Fabio Pignatelli wit incredible playing a super juicy tone)

    Bill

Requiem Pour un Con- Serge Gainsbourg-Literally one note but that tone and that groove seal it
Mayor of Simpleton- XTC- Insanely fun to play and weaves around the song effortlessly
    Anything played by Jannick Top
Anything off of 4 Visions- Eskaton, especially "Attente"
Daddy Needs a Throne- Camberwell Now- Absolutely ridiculous
Calonyction Girl- Kayo Dot- Beautiful tone
Anything from electric period Miles Davis- Solid and funky, the glue that holds that music together

I know it's more than six, but as a bassist I have a hard time choosing just a few, I'm sure my list would've be different tomorrow.

Good Times is iconic of course, but he has created many better Bass lines
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

    Centrifugal Funk - So What
The Who - Call Me Lightning
    Stanley Clarke - Lopsy Lu
    Bill Bruford - FiveG

that and School Days of course!

XTC - Millions ... Colin's line is so excellent

Parliament - Flashlight (Bernie Worrell created the line on at least three, possibly four connected Minimoog synthesizers*)

There's a lot I could list, but i'll stick to just two from Rutherford: Get Em Out By Friday and Can Utility (once he switches from guitar to bass)

Great calls, everyone. I'll try to list a few that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Peg - Steely Dan, Aja (Chuck Rainey)
How's Never - Gateway, Homecoming (Dave Holland)
New Religion - Duran Duran, Rio (John Taylor)
Sunday Papers - Joe Jackson, Look Sharp (Graham Maby)
Sound Chaser - Yes, Relayer (Chris Squire)
Oh! Darling - Beatles, Abbey Road (Paul McCartney)
Thela Hun Gingeet - King Crimason, Discipline (Tony Levin)

    So, so many...

    School Days - Stanley Clarke
Egocentric Molecules - Ralphie Armstrong (Ponty)
Aqua Marine - David Margen (Santana)

Tony Levin: Well, lots of stuff but I'll go for the live versions of "On the Air" and "Secret World".
John Entwistle: W.l.o.s.b.I.g.f. "Can You See the Real Me?" and "Dreaming from the Waist".
Peter Cetera (who was a great bassist in the day): live version of "Sing a Mean Tune Kid"
Prakash John: The whole Rock'n'Roll Animal album.
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

    1. Yes: “Heart of the Sunrise” (not perhaps an inspired choice, but one for the ages)
    2. Fiori-Séguin: “Deux cents nuits à l’heure” (Michel Dion’s fretless bass glides during the mid-point transition make the piece)
    3. Goblin: “Aquaman” (I could just fill this list with Fabio Pignatelli parts, so compelling and yet underrated)
    4. Pekka Pohjola: “Sampoliini” (I love how Pekka’s bass parts can be the focal point/anchor/hook of a piece without stealing focus from the ensemble. He was brilliant.)
    5. Finch: “Paradoxical Moods” (Peter Vink has this mandolin-like solo bass part near the end of the piece that is just to die for)
    6. Return to Forever: “No Mystery” (Had to include an acoustic bass part. There’s a lovely bowed part from Stanley Clark on this)
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

    Some great ones. I'll add:

    Percy Jones/Brand X-Malaga Virgen
Anthony Jackson/The O'Jays-For the Love of Money. Iconic.
    Mark Egan/Pat Metheny Group-Jaco.
    John Wetton/Family-Burlesque.
Paul Jackson/Headhunters-Absolute Proof, or Spank-o-Lee, take your pick.
    Wilbur Bascomb/Jeff Beck-Come Dancing

So many more. I stayed away from Weather Report on purpose, BTW.
