Two-part post.
Side one- In 1975 I managed to get my suburban Canadian hands on a then-rare copy of SBB’s Nowy Horizont. Having an actual Iron Curtain disc was badass enough at thr tender age of 16, but dammit, if the music wasn’t kickass as well (I had convinced myself that Iron Curtain rock just had to be full of dreadful imitators of generic American rock)! Has there been a band since that can so effortlessly combine jazz, classical, and blues without being the least self-conscious or mannered? That was my go to album on many Sunday mornings back in the day.
Besides Nowy, I have Pamiec and Slovenian Girls. These three just never get old. Was less impressed by the overt bluesiness of Karlstad 75. So, what else is recommended by these guys, as they have an extensive discography and appear to still be going strong.
Side two - I’ve also recently developed an appreciation for Krystof Komeda - Poland’s answer to Morricone perhaps? I was deeply impressed by pianist Leszek Mozdzer’s interpretations of Komeda’s canon as well as Skalpel’s pastiche sampling job of Polish 60’s jazz. Any thoughts on that highly influential but under discussed scene?
