^^^ exactly Zap! They set the bar so high on that opening theme that the rest of the album was rather anti-climatic.
For me it's Gentle Giant's Free Hand!
Brutal choice:....depending on my mood....and, in no particular order...
GG - Interview
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
VDGG - Pawn Hearts
Soft Machine - Grides
G.A.S -aholic

Damn! Based on your other choices I gotta check out that Mars Volta album!
I always thought Interview is a step towards the abyss in relation to what had occurred before. This second more-than-positive opinion (and again by someone whose taste has a lot of credibility for me) forces me to go back and revisit.

I can see that due to "Give it Back" which pointed in the threatening direction of a more commercial approach, but do revisit and let us know what you think.
Nico - The Marble Arch
Lyrically, it's a deeply personal LP, exploring conflicted emotions and unsettled states of mind. The music, high-lghting keys and winds, perfectly captures the vibe through drones and extended workouts that mesmerize, inducing an almost trance-like affect.

Yes indeed... and of course the title track... and "Design"! it's just a great album in my book. I like "Give it Back" too which although isn't one of the heavy GG killers, still has a very nice arrangement indeed. Hell, I thought if GG farted I would like but then "Giant for a Day" came out...
Thanks Mo. I'll have to check it out.

What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)
I think I’ll go with:
Änglagård - Hybris
But these were my close runner ups:
Il Balletto di Bronzo - Ys
Camel - Mirage
England - Garden Shed
U.K. - S/t
WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.
Too many favorites to choose just one.
I would be happy with my collection on shuffle forever.

Nostalgia, you know, ain't what it used to be. Furthermore, they tells me, it never was.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?
There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
About Interview, yes, it's much better than I remembered, particularly side 2. The arrangements and production appear to me a bit dry, and the first traces of commercialization creep in, but on the whole it's good, old Gentle Giant.
But I wouldn't put it on the same level with the first 5 albums. I don't see the same level of creativity and inspiration in Interview.
Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall.
Unfair to include live albums! Hard enough to pick a fav studio album
