The 1/2 mount cartridge is bolted onto an headshell with 2 small screws and nuts on either side. Then 4 wires are manually connected to it.

The Grado Black 1 is an 1/2 mount and is better than the highest end P-Mount cartridge, so you're golden.
    Cool, thanks for the help!

I occasionally get some static build-up when playing records, but that may be due to the felt mat I've been using. At least I can rule out the cartridge now.

I would strongly suspect it's your mat. On one occasion, I removed the mat and platter from my new Crosley TT, then forgot to replace the mat. I proceeded to play a record placing it directly on the platter, and static started building up. I then looked at the mat and said "Oh s***, I forgot the mat." When I replaced the mat, the static crackle gradually diminished in the space of a couple of minutes until it disappeared completely.

    Okay, that makes sense. Thanks!

What kind of mat do you use, btw?

I use one of those Vinyl Style mats made out of cork. They have an added bonus of an indent for the label portion of the disc, so the entire disc makes firm contact with the mat.
