The prog-rock legend NEKTAR is back after a turbulent time. The new album "Megalomania" describes the state of the world in the here and now and is characterized by the experiences and experiences of the last years. Time-critical, modern, but also not denying that NEKTAR has a big and long history. The new songs fit seamlessly into this history.

NEKTAR is characterized by many line-ups and musical excursions in all directions. Now there is a new line up, with Klaus Henatsch the constant for 11 years now on the keyboards. He is also the one who has taken over the staff of the late bandleader Roye Albrighton and now leads NEKTAR as musical director, producer and head of the band.

The songs on "Megalomania" convince with new songwriting, melodic complexity and musical adventures. But they also make an audible connection to the albums "Time Machine" and also to earlier Nektar releases.

In December 2018, NEKTAR will be touring and will prove live that they rightly belong to one of the signposts for the so-called neo-prog and are one of the primal celestial prog rockers.

In their luggage they will have the new album "Megalomania". It will come in CD as in vinyl form for the tour on the market. Also, the highly acclaimed last album "Live in Bremen" will now be available as a triple vinyl album.

A gigantic lightshow, which in addition to the accompaniment of the new songs also tells the story of the band visually, will inspire!

Most of these "complete lineup reboot" things don't seem to work, and this one is more dubious than many. Gong is one that seems to have worked but most of the band members had actually played with Daevid for several years. RJ Godfrey recently admitted his new Enid lineup was a flop, for example.

I agree this group would be better off calling itself "the official Nektar tribute" or somesuch. Or maybe Nektar: the Next Generation? But even so, IIRC Nektar *with* Roye and Ron weren't exactly selling out venues. So the market potential for this seems very limited.


And yes Taff is still with us AFAIK.

Sounds like they have someone with deep pockets investing in the band. Pressing up CDs and vinyl (triple vinyl!) of the new and previous release? A “gigantic light show”?

I don't wish failure on anyone but I'm in agreement with flowerking and Duncan.

Reading the OP, I am reminded of Roy Clay and his brand of "sizzle." Once the tour is underway I'm sure videos will show up on youtube. That will probably be my extent of my investment.

I will be buying this , I've been a fan of Nektar since 1974. Sure I know that this isn't Nektar , even when Roye kept the flame burning all those years it wasn't the original band with the exception of the brief period in 2002 when they came to Nearfest and also did some other shows together around the east coast before they broke up again. Even the excellent Evolution was not the full original band , as Mo was not there.

This band is not without some people who played with Roye for many years , Klaus Henatsch since 2007 , I saw him twice with Roye and he is really good . Tom Fry for a few years and of course his son Che who sat in on tours when Ron was not available and became a full time member after Ron left for good. I'm pretty sure knows the classic material. The only one I never heard of was the guitar player , he has some huge shoes to fill to say the least. My biggest concern will be the vocals , who will sing lead?

It will be worth it to me to purchase the new album , not just as a fan but also out of curiosity , if it isn't up to snuff it won't be a big loss.

Even the excellent Evolution was not the full original band , as Mo was not there.

Yes, buy Mo fully endorsed his replacement. "Evolution," IMO, is the last great album by Nektar. I still like everything that followed. But, "Evolution" stacks up very well with the albums by the classic lineup.

Thin Lizzy, Blood Sweat & Tears, Grand Funk and the Guess Who among a few I can recall have done this and failed miserably.

They are casino acts more like tribute bands, at least the so called Focus has Thys Van Leer and Uriah Heep has Mick Box but this is no Nektar for me either.

It is going to put more butts in seats than "Official Tribute to Nektar." And it probably isn't going to matter to 90% of the people who are there.

Grand Funk and the Guess Who at least have members from the classic lineups, though I'd never see the Guess Who with just the rhythm section. Lizzy's reunion apparently failed and it's over. BST is the one that's completely a tribute band.

Little River Band is one act that has succeeded with no original members. I recently read they gross over $2M annually. But it is surely easier for a singles-based band. People just want to hear the hits and go home happy if they do.

The Guess Who recently released a new album and are touring, but only drummer Garry Peterson remains. Strangely, Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy/Quiet Riot/Whitesnake) is now their bass player. And their lead singer goes by the name "D#".
