    Southern Empire - Civilisation

I'm surprised there's not a thread for this already, but the new Southern Empire disc was recently released and it is a BEAST! Killer vocals, drums, keys, everything... Some epic songwriting as well. I'm not great at writing reviews, so I'll just post some links. Really love this band.

And as I'm typing this, the opening track "Goliath's Moon" came up on progrock.com.

Really enjoying it as well, as are many others judging by the excellent reviews it seems to be getting.
Great melodies, nice use of recurring themes in the epics. I like the use of violin, sax and world music elements. It sounds like a slightly heavier version of Unitopia. I can't help wishing it was Mark Trueack on vocals though, even if Danny Lopresto is a great singer in his own right.
    Not just a Genesis fanboy.

Mark has got a golden voice for sure, but I really dig Danny as well. Got to meet both of them at a private event here in Chicago a year or two ago, and they're both really great guys.

    Did you like the first?

I’ve only heard a little of each album and they didn’t pull me in, but I’ll try again as I know one person who raves about the first album and likes the new one a lot.

The debut was much better, comparing with the new release.

What do you think about this?

I really like it ,the only downside are the fact that the epic 30 min song crossroads is not a new song . It appears on UPFs album fall in love with the world from 2014 under the name Travelling man the story of eshu ,ok it is reworked and parts are rewritten ,but i would have prefered a totally new song .
Anyway i really like the album .

    Cheers

Yeah, I agree. Like I said with the "Intersection"/"How Long" issue from UPF's album and Southern Empire's first album, Trueack and Timms needed to work up a better divorce settlement.

A better representation of the bands "progressive sound" How Long is a ballad, pretty talented band.

Didn't hear the first one. Just finished listening to the new one and it's pretty good.
Someone mentioned Transatlantic as a reference point.
More like Unitopia Mk. II but decent stuff.
Should tide me over until January when the new Neal Morse Band LP is due...

Not seen it mentioned on here. Sean Timms had a heart attack a few days ago (https://www.facebook.com/seantimms) but is recovering at home and is hoping to get back to business very soon.

It's been an absolutely wonderful year for new releases, with or without this 'Southern Empire'.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that, but glad he is recovering. I hope he gets back to 100% soon.

Randomly listened to this album for the first time a week and a half ago passively and didn’t think much of it. Over the few days following that I realized I had a few ear worms and an itch to try it again. Put it back on and was blown away. I’ve had it pretty much on repeat since. Some damn good songwriting and vocals. The beginning vocals of “Cries for the Lonely” sound like they could be straight out of an Act of The Dear Hunter. Just dead on Casey Crescenzo. However, the vocals are a bit more versatile throughout the album. The last track “Innocence & Lonely” is the weakest point of the album and feels a little monotonous to me, but it’s still good enough. Stellar album.

I'm not sure which of their albums this is - the first or second. But I listened to the first a couple of times, and while there WERE some earworms for me, certain parts sounded so familiar and commercial. But I need to give it a try again and see how it's aging. Both albums.
