Yeah, I have never considered myself a precious purist in these things but I find myself wishing they'd go back to the purist recreations we have known them for. The Genesis tribute band market is surely the most crowded of all such markets and the Sealed Knot level of attention to detail is without doubt their unique selling point. Ain't hindsight a marvellous thing?

I'm laughing (though not out loud) about the guitarist wearing a Hackett wig. I'd like to see him wear a current-era Hackett wig.

Myself, I've seen enough of the earlier TMB shows but not the Collins-fronted era shows, that if this didn't have some of that I'd skip it. But here's a question: is there any Collins-era banter? (There's probably the whole tambourine thing, eh?).

As long as he doesn't do the "contacting the other world" audience participation thing Phil used to do before Home By The Sea...

This is what I said when this "hodge-podge" approach was announced, before I even heard the setlist specifics. Sounds like I'll probably be right. Their whole mo which made them the best Genesis tribute band ever was exact recreations of specific tours. If they are now just another Genesis cover band, they lose all that unique credibility.

Surely the flowing locks of 70's era Hackett hair & the current Hackett hair are pretty similar! (Although the same can't be said of the masses of grey, balding heads that he has to watch bobbling about in his audience during every show!)

No, sadly there was zero effort by Denis Gagné to look like or imitate Collins. So during the whole of the opening "A Wind's Tail" section (which was predominantly a jigsaw of segued together instrumental phrases taken from tracks across the two albums ) he either played bass or additional keyboards & bits of percussion whilst hidden at the back of the stage - only venturing forwards for a few odd lines of vocal now and again (& looking no different to how he does later in the show as Gabriel).

I also think they will lose their appeal if they now move away from the anorak levels of 1970's detail for which they are appreciated to become another generic tribute act.

    A tail of two halves

My review of The Musical Box ‘A Genesis Extravaganza’ London 11/10/18

Much as I love 70s Genesis, there’s something vaguely unnerving about being in an auditorium full of men in their fifties and sixties chanting ‘Touch me, now, now, now, now, now!’ Yet, despite the odd accompanying crotch grab, that was about as weird as it got at the London performance by The Musical Box. This Canadian tribute band played a fairly unique set of just over 2 hours of which the first half was composed of 2 long medleys, the first of which was entitled ‘The wind’s tail’. As the title suggests, this medley was composed entirely from the 4 man era material. Yet, for some strange reason, they chose to make it 90% instrumental and filleted the songs so severely that even the guitar solo on Vine was flung at us before the taste buds were ready for it. Yes, it slipped down nicely enough, but how much more enjoyable it would have been had we been primed by the accompanying aroma of the verses. Still, the medley had its moments and it was good to hear that piano bridge from Mad Man Moon, disembodied as it was.
The second medley was less disappointing. ‘Broadway melodies’ was the title but being no great fan of the Lamb, I had low expectations. Yet they played all of the six tracks I actually liked and played them fully so we were spared the vicious editing from which the first medley suffered. Ok, we still had to suffer the jazz-handed title track and the jaunty ‘Counting our Time’ but that was, kind of, expected and it was vaguely amusing to watch the baldie in front of me count out his own time with his pot belly, wobble by wobble. However, by the time the interval came along, I was left feeling somewhat deflated. This was the crème de la crème of Genesis tribute bands and here I was feeling a bit, well, disappointed.
However, I needn’t have worried. After the interval they got down to business. It was obvious that they would devote this second set to classic Gabriel-era stuff as they’d clearly decided to work back chronologically, but would they take refuge in the usual hits? Not a bit of it! They opened the second set with Time table then followed with Seven Stones and After the Ordeal (a track Genesis themselves never performed live): refreshing stuff. And it didn’t stop there either. More unlikely tracks followed in the form of Looking for Someone & Can-utility whose guitar intro was played especially beautifully. By the time the inevitable hit arrived in the form of The Cinema Show the audience had scratched their itch for something different, yet even here we were in for a surprise as they segued into Aisle of Plenty.
The show closed with Volcano & The Musical Box, both in their own right climactic pieces even if unlikely bedfellows. I steeled myself for the expected mimicry of Gabriel’s on-stage antics which quickly wears thin after you’ve seen it once or twice and then serves merely to distract from the music but was relieved to see that the singer had abandoned this and had added his own twist by ditching the usual old man mask for a fox’s head and a red dress: a top quality prop for a symphonic climax.
The whole show was performed to a backdrop of projected imagery as the musicians largely sat upon stools and plied their trade with a refreshing degree of professional detachment. I might not have indulged in a crotch-grab myself but something in this band’s understated virtuosity certainly touched me and their bold foray into oft overlooked album tracks still touches me..... now .... now.... now.... now....now.
My talents may not be obvious but they are always... always... delicious!

    Good Day Folks ~

Regarding the two TMBox shows at the Danforth in Toronto (Jan 18th and 19th) Does anyone here know if the seats will be installed, tix holders bring chairs, or it is a 'standing' show? Apparently it can vary!

    Any comments are appreciated

^ They are going to install seats for this event. They will be placed far enough apart that 2 topless busty young women will be able to stand on either side of you and fan you with palm fronds.

    Can't beat that.

Seats will be present for this show, I'm sure, Chris. It's been that way at every TMB show that I've ever seen there.

It was a misprint, he meant "Two topless busty old dudes...."

Would love to see them again, caught the Lamb tour at the Royal Oak Theater in Royal Oak Michigan some years back.
For some reason they don't like Florida, which is surprising seeing how Steve Hackett always sells out the Capitol Theater in Clearwater.
C'mon down guys, there's enough of us old geezers and geezerettes to sell the place out.

I mentioned this to Michael Sadler from SAGA on FB before, and he always said they'd love to play other venues but it's up to the promoters. If enough people squeak their wheels enough they might get heard, unfortunately we happen to love a genre that isn't mainstream.

I and a few others have said this multiple times before, but basically, the way it works is, if you want a given band or performer to come to your city, you kinda have to do it yourself. You have to put up the money yourself (which you probably won't make back) and set up the arrangements yourself.

Got tix for the show here in town, where we also saw 'em last year. Saw the Nearfest pre-show as well. Not an event I'd travel for, but as I said, here in town.

Hoping for them to hit the US. The nearest I've seen them play is Milwaukee, which is about 6 hours for me. I'd consider it.

They're playing the Arcada Theater in St Charles IL, 2 nights in March. (West of Chicago)

Last year they played 10 minutes from my apartment by foot - and I missed it.

They must have known I was coming because they switched the date on me. Or, I may have heard the wrong date. One of those.
