I did a search and didn't find any threads on this genre surprisingly. I know there are fans in here. It's a favorite for me while I drive depending on the band of course. Just curious to hear what your favorites are....

I saw Caspian in 2012; they were really good.

Yeah...Caspian is one of my favorites. Another one that is about to go on tour is This Will Destroy You (new album dropping in September).

And Godspeed You! Black Emperor is currently hoofing it across the States...I am seeing them in Baltimore tomorrow night in fact. Still one of the most amazing live bands around IMHO.

God is an Astronaut is another I really like as well as heavier stuff like Russian Circles (are they post rock?) and Pelican.

Godspeed You Black Emperor are probably the best post rock band I've seen live though Sigur Ros are still on the bucket list. Others I really like:-

I'm pretty sure that Gosta Berlings Saga is considered Post Rock. They would get my no. 1 nod. (And they were terrific live.)

I've enjoyed some of Sigur Ros's music, and really liked a musical documentary I saw so I know they are capable to good things. BUT I have to say when I saw them in concert last summer it was a total snooze. The only thing that kept me awake was the constant overbearing bass that kept us all vibrating like one of those old electronic football games. Every song they did sounded like the previous one - just a wash of sound, the same tone of plaintive vocals and that contstant incessant irritating bass rattling. About as dynamic as a diesal generator. Everone I was with pretty much felt the same. This was at a large outdoor pavillion, maybe it would be different at a smaller club. I dunno, the crowd seems to be into it. To me it seemed like they were just going through the motions.

There's a lot of atmospheric build and release usually at loud volumes in length pieces, they often have very long silly song titles.

Lot's of noodling with jam bands. I'd say post rock is more about atmosphere. Some post rock can be very samey which I don't have patience for. There has to be a little variety and transition for my easily bored brain

I had tried to get into them, but couldn't do it. Like you I found it a total snooze. And did you ever get one of those electric football players to actually run 100yds without veering off or going in a complete circle?

God is an Astronaut is my fave, though I'm a novice with the genre. I also really like Pymlico, if they're considered to be post rock. Been meaning to check out Russian Circles - they've gotten love here, before.
