Here's a small sample of Dave's love for the drums.

And after pretty much any band performed, Dave would ask the drummer, "are those your drums?"
"Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?"--Dalai Lama
Dave did a couple "drummer week" things, where for a week, the musical guest would be whichever drummer, doing a drum solo. Mostly it was rock drummers, apart from Sheila E and, I wanna say the jazz drummer he used on one of them was Roy Haynes, but I can't remember right now. I think he did this twice, with different drummers each week. One of them was Neil Peart.
The only thing was, he did this in like 2010 and 2011, I think, after many of the great jazz drummers had passed away. I remember watching those things and thinking, "If he had done this back in the 80's, there'd be an entirely different set of drummers used". Dave himself admitted he got the idea to do it after watching a Youtube video of Buddy Rich, then made some sort of wisecrack about how Buddy wouldn't return their phone calls (of course, Buddy had been dead for something like 25 years at the time).
BTW, talking about Gavin Harrison, something I find amusing is that the first time I remember hearing his name was when he joined Porcupine Tree. I didn't realize his professional career actually went back to the 80's, and in fact, I had a Mick Karn album that he played, The Tooth Mother, which I didn't realize he was on, until I pulled it out years late,r and saw his name (and Jakko Jaksyk's for that matter) in the credits. Surprised the hell out of me.
I saw a very young Gavin Harrison in Renaissance during a tour sometime around 1984 while I was living in the Denver area. A video was released from this tour, filmed at the Park West in Chicago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7U0nfT8w4A).
Looking at this again, I realize how much I miss Jon Camp in Renaissance.

Saw PT many years ago and while I don't really enjoy the music for whatever reason I came out of there thinking that is one helluva rhythm section there. Frikking amazing and I'm glad, even if I don't get the music, that I got to see that.

ah, letterman’s “drum solo week” from a few years back … neil peart was on that one, too.
