Thread: Signature Drum patterns

    Signature Drum patterns

Recent debate with drummer that there are less distinct 'signature' patterns / grooves by drummers now.

    Got me thinking

E.g Bonham - When the Levee Breaks

Bruford- opening to Heart of the Sunrise, Beelzebub, Hells Bells, Larks Tongues pt2, In the Dead of Night

    Palmer- Eruption, Tarkus, Tank

Hiseman - Major Keys , War Dance

    Collins- Apocolypse 9/8, Wot Gorilla

Simon Phillips - Space Boogie (Cobham)

    Alan White - Changes

    Mike Portnoy 6:00

    Peart - Tom Sawyer

    Terry Bozzio - US Drag

    MIke Giles, Schizoid Man opening

Just a few of the top of my head...

The first 38 seconds of this contains something I came up with that I can't find elsewhere in my music collection.

That link doesn't work for me.

One of my favorite pieces of drumming is Andy Ward in A Chord Change especially the first minute or two. Very active yet, to my ears, innovative.

    That's better, thanks.

Keith Moon - the "d'd'DUM, d'd'DUM pom pom" used in "The Rock" on Quadrophenia
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

I might have gone with Down and Out (if not the more obvious one from his first solo album).

With this talk about Genesis signature drum patterns, we should't leave out Chester Thompson's one from "More Trouble Every Day" / "Afterglow".

    ...While certainly NOT PROG....

Ron Wilson (From the Surfaris) drumming on Wipeout was as signature a drum groove as it got back-in-the-day.

I thought that the OP's reason for starting this thread was to discuss whether you still hear as much of a signature style in today's drummers compared to those of yesteryear. I'm gonna say no, you don't. As far as adding to the list, I can't believe no one's mentioned Ringo...
