Thread: Best of 2018 so far

  1. #176
There have been some "mainstream" releases that haven't got much traction in this thread.

    Kino - Radio Voltaire
    Spock's Beard - Noise Floor
    The Sea Within

Plus the new Pineapple Thief just hit the mat.

Surprisingly no sample I can find anywhere to endorse these guys to my friends.

Looked forward to all 3 of these and they all disappointed.

Two more strong candidates for my top ten:

Forrest Fang - Scenes from a Ghost Train. Forrest has really been on a roll recently and this album is no exception. A must if you like ambient.
The Necks - Body. It's The Necks, so 'nuff said.

Adam Minkoff-'Til The End My Dear: Arrangements Of Stravinsky.Just as the title states.Multi- instrumentalist Adam Minkoff transcribed, arranged, orchestrated and conducted compositions by Igor Stravinsky for a small ensemble of jazz and rock musicians.Electric bass, electric guitar, keyboards, drum set and horns.

Outstanding music, well deserving of inclusion on my best of 2018 list.

The Bandcamp page says that it's only available for streaming or purchase in the US because the Stravinsky compositions remain in copyright elsewhere. Shame.

I assume there must be some hidden complications involved here as (maybe simplistically) I’d have thought they could just have paid a royalty to rhe relevant collecting society on the ex-US sales. But perhaps the hassle involved is more than likely sales would be worth.

56 titles on my list currently

15 to check out, and another 8-10 to review.

Will post a list soon. It's been another very good year for new tunes, imo. Probably doesn't surpass last year for me but still excellent and of course there are
many albums that I will not get too this year. Will inevitably have to get caught up in 2019.

Anyone hear the new Carptree yet?

Yep, got it from Lasers Edge last week. Good stuff! If you like their quirky, dramatic sound you will not be disappointed.
