RIP Mr Taylor. When I moved to Madison in 1971, Taylor was the artist-in-residence and also taught at the U of Wis. He played a few solo piano gigs when he was here. I saw him twice, and his music always made you think as much as listen.

One of the last of the true giants. I played this one tonight in his honor--it's my favorite of his albums.

Unlike with a prime set of his contemporaries (Sanders, Lacy, AEoC, Lateef, Ayler, Sun Ra, Braxton and the lots), I tried but couldn't really connect to his music. But yes, he was rightfully legendary, and his generation is all the poorer with his loss. I'm gonna spin my Silent Tongues vinyl and try yet again.

^ Well, I haven't really heard much of it, as I'm generally not too big on the post-hardbop/pre-free (blah-blah) interstage of things. But I did quite enjoy what I heard from Air, so I should probably explore a bit. Never heard much of Taylor's later works (i.e. post-70s) either, for that matter.

Some of the pianostuff on Area's albums reminds me a lot of Taylor.
Rest in peace, maestro.

Goddamit! An idol! I think I bought Unit Structures when I was 17 and found myself so baffled by the sonic density of the music. Took years to understand it. Over time I picked up at least another 20 discs or so by him, each more challenging than the last. A titan, who will be sorely missed.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.
