Phil Miller (Hatfield/National Health...) - Legacy Website announced

This just in from Phil's good friend & collaborator Doug Boyle (Caravan, Robert Plant, Nigel Kennedy) :

    Phil Miller - The Legacy.

My good friend Phil Miller was a highly significant figure on the progressive music scene right from it’s inception. I know he needs little introduction here. Hatfields, Matching Mole, National Health, In Cahoots and beyond...

Shortly after Phil sadly passed over last October, Phil’s wife Herm and her son Kyle began to plan a legacy site to celebrate the man and his music. I came on board as an audio archivist and a few weeks back we began the vast task of going through boxes of cassette tapes, DATs, photos and scores with a view to making this material generally and freely avaliable. There is no commerce here. Phil wanted all his music avaliable for free

We now have a deep site that we are ready to launch and will be expanding quickly as we add content. Particularly we have many hours of unheard of archive recordings now being digitised and a couple up on the site already. There are also endless photos, documents and some fascinating family background info all to be added . We wanted an organic site that would grow so we welcome your comments and would be very happy for all interactions and contributions .

This has been an emotional process for us all but rewarding and positive. I am proud to be an admin on this site and looking forward to seeing you over there. If you could share this message and link anywhere you think appropriate we would so appreciate it.

Please come and visit to celebrate our launch day and say hi.

Awesome. Well deserved. I loved the way he would change chords, such an almost melancholy, yet warm feel to his transitions. Was my 2nd favorite of 4 great composers in Hatfield... (behind Dave Stewart, like most everyone)

Great stuff. Phil has always been one of my guitar heroes and seeing him live with In Cahoots at Progman Cometh 15 years ago was amazing, and gave me the ability to cross off a bucket list band. The site sounds really exciting as the cassettes will get added to the site.

I already listened to the Delivery '72 show twice. Loved it. A lot of familiar themes. I assume this is R. Sinclair/Pyle/the Millers? Who is on flute and sax? Is it Coxhill?

His remarks about the un-named scales on "Calyx" are interesting.

I had the same problem a number of years ago, and it was with exactly the same scale. It has no name at all in classical theory, which doesn't consider altered scales as entities in themselves, but only as momentary changes within standard, established scales. In jazz theory, various modes of it have multiple inconsistent and confusing names, but no accepted designation that classes them together as different aspects of the same succession of notes.
The scale itself could be described as: whole tone, semitone, minor third, semitone, whole tone, whole tone, semitone.
    or:
    • a Lydian mode with a minor three, or a melodic minor with a sharped (tritone) four: C#, D#, E, G, Ab, Bb, C , C#,
    • a major scale with a flatted six: Ab, Bb, C, C#, D#, E, G, Ab,
    • a Mixolydian mode with a flatted second: D#, E, G, Ab, Bb, C, C#, D#,
    • a Phrygian mode with the fourth flatted down to a major third: C, C#, D#, E, G, Ab, Bb, C (Phil's first un-named scale),
    • a Dorian mode with a flatted (tritone) fifth: Bb, C, C#, D#, E, G, Ab, Bb (Phil's second un-named scale).
or any of several other designations.

    It's Didier Malherbe.
And you got the rest of the line-up right.

I am loving this site. I never got to cross Phil off my bucket list so all this live material helps ever so slightly. There is more and more music being added regularly. Great to hear Pip again too and not enough is said about Fred Baker's bass playing around here. What a monster!

Hey I have a Phil Miller question.

He has a track on "Split Seconds" named "Your √2" which is often written out as "Your Root 2." But the square root of 2 is considered irrational (like pi, because it never resolves) -- so shouldn't the track be translated as "You're Irrational"? Anybody ever hear if that was what Phil was going for?

More likely, imho, a pun on "your route, too", although what this ultimately means I will not venture to guess.

Coincidentally I was just having an e-mail conversation with Phil Howitt (Facelift Magazine) about some of Phil's album/song titles, and here are a few of Phil's suggestions, which I'm sure he won't mind me quoting :

"Cutting Both Ways is a term which describes something which has both positives and negatives. A bit pros and cons for artists of Youtube postings, then!

Split Second - ‘seconds’ in English can refer to going back for more in terms of eating. Might even be an oblique reference to [Hatfield's compilation album] ‘Afters’, which refers to pudding or dessert. Hence a second helping of Phil Miller, split between the programming and InCa stuff. Typical Phil Miller double meaning, I’ve always thought.

Bass Motives – base motives are those which arise from some sort of slightly depraved instinct.

Digging In is a sort of stoic continuation of a task (if I’m cycling, and not feeling particularly good, I might ‘dig in’ until I get a burst of energy). I always thought this related to the fact that Phil might have been having a difficult time supporting himself at this part of his career? Digging In could also relate to enthusiastically tackling what’s on your dinner plate!

Your Root 2, always assumed this related to a mathematical equation (I.e. the square root of 2) as well as a pun on route/direction. Not sure why though!

Hard Shoulder – an extra lane on the motorway for accident recovery."
