As a Dutch I will naturally follow the speed skating and short track, because we are likely to score many medals there.

Other sports I will watch in particular are ski jumping and biathlon.

My preferred Olympics between the two.

Here's to ODing on sports we only see in America once every 4 years.

Interestingly, they won an average of about 8-10 medals in the 4 previous Olympics, and then suddenly shot up to 24 medals in 2014, all in speed skating. Hmmmmmmmmm.....

The unified women's hockey team is big news here in Kalamazoo. Their coach is Sarah Murray who is the daughter of Western Michigan University hockey coach Andy Murray.

That might be the one exception given its a direct physical contest between two athletes. The judging still leaves it wide open to corruption. If it was a pure sport they'd continue until one gave up or was knocked out.

That is the one problem with the "subjective" argument. But... is boxing judged on artistic merit?

No, it's judged on technical merit, like some of the other judged competitions.

I recall seeing some Olympic boxing matches where the fix was clearly in for one country over another, though it is usually with the referee.

I'd enjoy speed skating if it were more like roller derby.

What do you imply wit that hmmmmmmmm?

The problem is more that the Norwegians, Germans (women) , Canadians (men) and Americans USED to have at least a couple of good speed skaters that contested for the medals, in 2014 they were nowhere. There is probably not enough sponsor money into that sport to sustain a good selection of proffesional athletes.
In the netherlands speed skating is extremely popular. All athletes are full time professionals.

I expect the Netherlands to do very well again this year but probably not as well as in 2014.

Boxing could (and has been, I believe) quantifiably judged, using landed punches, etc.

Boxing is not a sport. Boxing is violence.

I don't necessarily consider it a sport, either, although I think there's a plausible argument to be made on both sides. Some would argue that football is violence, too.

The Olympics weren't even officially opened last night, and we already had some live coverage on the CBC. Mixed Doubles Curling: Canada vs Norway. We lost.

The main difference is that in football (soccer of course) the prime objective is to score goals. In boxing it is to cause your opponent brain damage, because that is what a knockout does.

It could be argued that the prime objective of boxing, football, or any sport is to make as much money as possible by entertaining the largest number of people. Choosing sides and placing bets=more money rolling in.

    _______________

I just checked the TV schedule for the next few days on NBC's Olympic "coverage." As far as I can tell, tonight has 3.5 hours of Olympics at 5:00, repeated at 8:30. Tomorrow (Fri) night has 3.5 hours of Opening Ceremonies at 5:00, repeated at 8:30. Saturday has Olympics at random times throughout the day, but not continuous. Does no good to complain. People complain about NBC's "coverage" every year. It only seems to motivate NBC to do worse. Oh, well. I can't stay awake through a commercial break anyway, so I will just enjoy any competition I happen to see. I don't have cable TV. Maybe it's nature's way of telling me to spend more time in sports bars, where I can watch all channels simultaneously. I could watch online, but only if it doesn't require cable login. I'll see what I can find.

NBC has many channels that will all be showing Olympic coverage.
