I liked the London one but then I'm British, and it had Mike Oldfield!

I share your bias - perhaps that's why I expected (hoped for) more.

And of course, Beijing was a hard act for anyone to follow...

    Now I see those posts.

There's no way the British could match the massed ranks of regimented automaton 'volunteers' that China had, or the $$'s they had to throw at it. So they went with the British approach of self deprecating humour, bizarre oddness and unique British institutions no-one else would understand. Personally I thought it was the right approach and well done.

It appears you have never been to a prog festival.

This was the best tweet about the Winter Olympics I saw and pretty much sums up my curling experience:

    [watching curling]
after 1 mins: ugh this is dull
10 mins: he's overdone the turn on this stone
30 mins: three in the house means nothing if your centre guard is ripe for a hit and roll
    1hr: SWEEEEEEEP MOTHERFUCKER

Legitimately I was the most excited watching this at the Olympics.

That and the Women's Hockey gold were probably the most exciting events I saw live (stayed up late to watch both). On the downside, and this will be sacrilege for some, but is it just me or is Lindsay Vonn one of the most overhyped and overmarketed Olympians ever? I know she is considered one of the best skiers ever, and I could never do what she has done, she has won a lot of world titles/cups, but looking strictly at her Olympic record, 1 gold and 2 bronze medals over 4 Olympic games has got to be disappointing isn't it? I know she has had some unfortunate injuries and missed the last games, but her Olympic career seems filled with falls, DNF, and coming up short of expectations relative to the massive marketing hype, endorsements and 'face of the US Winter Olympics' marketing she always seemed to get. I was very surprised when I read that over all those Olympics games, it was 1 gold and 2 bronze.

Well she was a star at one of the legitimately great sports at the Winter Olympics, the Downhill, competed in all the alpine events, won World titles, is very easy on the eye. I think she's the real deal. I found it kind of irritating the amount of press she gets but then I think most American athletes are over hyped, the number of times I heard someone was a contender to only finish 5 minutes behind a Norwegian was ridiculous.

However - IMO they both relied too heavily on light-show gimmicks, and not enough on human or analog elements. I think the Beijing 2008 opening ceremony remains the gold standard, and don't expect it to be bettered for a LONG time. (That said - those drones were seriously impressive.)

The short Beijing 2022 presentation was better than Korea's opening or closing ceremonies.
Maybe this is what you're referring to, but on NBC they said there were elements to the opening show (and probably the closing) that were only visible to TV audiences. They should have had Frank Zappa in there!

That would number three for me, the second being the women's cross country gold medal (which I don't think I saw live, but did see without hearing about the results so it was like it was live to me).

And I suppose it depends on much stock you put on the Olympics, and I do tend to agree with Nogbad above that American athletes get overhyped (obviously in America atleast).
