    Top 10 Cuneiform Releases

Let's celebrate our favorite Runes here.

I tried to keep my list to one per artist so it would be diverse. I also tried to limit my list to those albums that I know (or guessed) were not previously issued on another label.

For those looking for a quick reference list:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...cords_releases

    1. Djam Karet - The Devouring (One of my favorite prog albums of the 90s)
    2. Yo Miles - Sky Garden, Upriver (Added both albums as they are part of the same project. It's a lot to take in, but just phenomenal arrangements and playing)
    3. John Surman - Way Back When (A crown jewel among hidden gems of the formative period of jazz-rock)
    4. Forgas Band Phenomena - L'axe du fou (Their best. Was a pleasure to see live as well)
    5. Soft Machine - Noisette (Cuneiform was noted for Soft Machine archives. I think this one goes down as the best)
    6. Miriodor - Parade/Live at NEARfest 2002 (It could have been Mekano here, but the combo of Parade with the live album made it the winner)
    7. U Totem - s/t (One of the first "advant" albums I could really get into - and still do)
    8. Present - Le Poison Qui Rend Fou (A classic. I always knew this as part 2 of the CD reissue, but it stands alone)
    9. Machine and the Synergetic Nuts - Leap Second Neutral (One of the many "how did you find these guys" moments on the label)
    10. Thinking Plague - In Extremis (Another classic that needs no words)

Cheating a bit by adding these last 3 I couldn't bring myself to remove:

The Claudia Quintet - Semi-Formal (This and I, Claudia are my favorites. It was great to see Hollenbeck get some attention)
Planeta Imaginario - Optical Delusions (Nobody ever talked about these guys. I was always hopeful to hear more)
Wadada Leo Smith - Tabligh (He has other genius works, but this one clicked the most)

    Ready. Set. Go.

I don’t like making lists like this, so I’ll just say a couple of favorites are U Totem - Strange Attractors, Virgil Moorefield - Distractions on the Way to the King’s Party, and all the Soft Machine titles. Oh, and the Art Zoyd box.

    Plenty of others.

Lately enjoying the last two Thinking Plague CDs. I don't have a list but I like the Hugh Hopper, Soft Machine, and 5uu's albums.

Here's 11, in no particular order:

Thinking Plague - Ealy Plague Years
    Thinking Plague - In Extremis
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic - Dawn of the Cycads
    Miriodor - Mekano
    Happy Family - Happy Family
    Happy Family - Tosco
    Philharmonie - Rage
Picchio dal Pozzo - Camere Zimmer Rooms
    Deus ex Machina - Cinque
    Deus Ex Machina - Devoto
Cheer Accident - Fear Draws Misfortune

My list could easily have been double that, but these stand as my very favorites.

I will have to go through my collection to figure out a list of favorites, some of which I might not have realized were Cuneiform releases.

Thanks for the reminder about Noisette; been meaning to pick this one up for a while.

And the Leap Second Neutral disc is a beast! It's like jazz-rock/Canterbury meets that crazy, heavy style that Japan is so great at (e.g. Koenjihyakkei). A "how did you find these guys" moment indeed!

Yes!!! This is a great disc, one of my faves of recent memory. Some really cool Canterbury-ish stuff going on here. You're right, it doesn't get discussed here but it really deserves attention.

Whatever my list might be, I would always want to add something, especially when you include re-releases.

I still want to create an Advant calendar. On the 25th day you open the last door and get a chocolate Christian Vander.

As for a Top 10, it's an impossible task. There are just so many, I own the majority of them, and they're pretty much all fantastic. Just want to mention one in particular that would certainly be high on my list that hasn't been mentioned yet: Peter Frohmader's Macrocosm. (Unfortunately long out of print.)

If I'd listed 12 albums, that would have been the 12th. But I was already pushing it with 11, so I refrained. Until now.

I don't think I'd be able to come up with ten right this second, and the list probably betrays my relatively conservative taste but the ones I was most fond of were "Manna/Mirage", "185", "Open City", and "Chronometers" by The Muffins, "Arriving Twice" by Gilgamesh, "Grides" by the Soft Machine. I also really liked the Proto-Kaw album at the time. Kinda like an American Van Der Graaf Generator. "Greek Structure Sunbeam" was a cool song.

I find my preferences tend to align fairly closely to PY's {GOMA!!) and as I have a couple on Cozy's list, I will check out the others I don't and report back.

I'll also do one per artist max.

    Univers Zero - Uzed
    Heldon - Stand By
    Miriodor - Mekano
Forgas Band Phenomena - Soleil 12
Gosta Berlings Saga - Glue Works
    Guapo - Five Suns
Virgil Moorefield - Distractions on the Way to the King's Party
    Present - the 2-on-1
    rmi - Emissaries
    U Totem - U Totem

The three artists I could really just keep listing them are UZ, Miriodor, and Heldon, and it was hard not to list the Muffins, Alec Redfearn, or Von Zamla.

  24. #24
Man, too many. Cunei is by far the largest label in my collection, and growing. I'll try and stick to the rules.

Thinking Plague - A History of Madness
Univers Zero - Ceux du Dehors
    Bubblemath - Edit Peptide
    Ahvak - Ahvak
    Happy Family - Toscco
    Guapo - 5 Suns
    5uus - Abandonship
Machine and the Synergetic Nuts - Leap Second Neutral
Cheer Accident - Fear Draws Misfortune
    Miriodor - Avanti!

I will limit to one album per artist (otherwise half my top 10 will be Miriodor albums)

    1 Miriodor - Jongleriers Elastiques
    2 Ahvak - Ahvak
    3 U totem - s/t
4 Thinking plague - In this life
5 Cheer accident - Fear draws Misfortune
    6 univers zer0 - Ceux du dehors
    7 Schnellertllermeier - Rights
8 Present - le poisson qui rend foux
    9 Von Zamla - 1983
    10 5uus - Regarding purgatories

But there's too much great stuff to mention really
