Doing full Phil this evening.
He's quite cautious overall on the Delivery recordings, but with Mole he's obviously encouraged to act out quite a bit. It works fairly well on "Part of the Dance" (his own track on the first album), but he truly shines on Little Red Record - on which he was infamously tampered by the presence of Fripp, from whom he really didn't have anything to fear (I'd say). More to awe at when taking in Dave McRae, I suppose; although he not only stands the test but exceeds splendidly - and the side 1 suite is incredible! Of course, Miller at this stage is often best remembered by "God Song" (from same album), and I'll have to say - how the *HELL* does anyone come up with that chord progression?
Or "Calyx"?
Both Hatfields and the Healths; shit, this is some of the greatest 'art rock' music ever committed to reel. And Miller is a substantial part of why. It wouldn't have turned out this good if Ritchie Blackmore, Chris Spedding or Clem Clempson played, to put it like that. The only other UK guitarists pf the day with this kind of understated personality, IMO, were Ray Russell and Ollie Halsall.
But Jeez; Before a Word Is Said. This is... I'm speechless. Possibly one of the finest electric guitar performances of all time, IMHO. From a 'progressive' viewpoint anyway

"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
Playing some Hatfield myself this afternoon while at work. What an incredible pair of records those were.
Same goes for Matching Mole, and National Health for that matter. But the sheer musicianship on display with both Hatfield and Health albums is just astonishing at times. No idea how Phil made his playing sound so effortless, like on "Lounging There Trying".
One of the greatest bands of all time. They were even 'prog pop' way before anyone even thought about designating such a ridicule.
Fantastic playing on Rotter's (and the first too) and with Health, but more people need to hear the amazingly sombre melodies of Before a Word Is Said.
IMHO, of course.

You're absolutely right, one of the best groups to ever have formed. Their ability to write ear-catching melodies and meld them to turn-on-a-dime "proggy" arrangements is something that few have managed to surpass or even achieve (the new Bubblemath disc is another good example of this, IMO).
Haven't heard Before a Word Is Said though, and actually didn't even realize it existed before now. I'm gonna look it up and give it some listening time -- looks like it's on Spotify actually! Thanks for the heads-up, man.
Well at the risk of being a shitheel.... it drives me nuts when people talk about dead people getting together in the afterlife. It’s a pleasant thought perhaps, but not very bloody realistic.
Oh, for Christ's sake.
Don't take it literally.

Oh well, at least Phil now has 72 virgins at his beck and call
Too bad they're all male prog fans.

If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.
"And it's only the giving

I was searching to find some less known recordings he did or guesting or collaborating not a lot to be found
I saw he played on one of the Caravan album
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
^^^ Phil is listed as guest on guitar on one Waterloo Lilly track. Haven't looked at the notes in a while so I can't remember which one but probably Love in Your Eye.
