Spotify Playlists for Progressive Rock fans.

I'm a music lover, cd/lp collector and Spotify playlist curator. I have created a lot of specialised playlists. One series is Prog 70 sorted by country. The point of these lists is to promote rare and unheard of bands from the 70s. To let people discover and explore new (old) bands.

I'm curious what you guys think of the playlists. Feedback about the lists is welcome. Thanks!

I checked out the Finnish list, which has a pretty good selection. "Lady With the Veil" is a great choice for the opener, and I like that Nimbus bonus track, which appears to have only recently been unearthed. "Grandma's Rocking Chair" is another winner. How come no Tasavallan Presidentti?

I'll get to the other playlists as time allows. For more suggestions, consider the red-listed tracks on this page.

A question. I have been a Spotify Premium member for a few years and have never seen these before. As a Spotify user how would I have known about these playlists and any other playlists that may be of interest to me. I would have never thought to search for lists such as these. Is there a place within Spotify to find all of these 'special' playlists?? Thanks in advance

@Zaragon: Thanks. I will add Tasavallan Presidentti later. Great lists you have on RYM, very interesting, and great material for further research!

@Hondo: You could have found them on the community forum of Spotify, and search for progressive rock. Here's a post from me with different playlists:

    https://community.spotify.com/t5/Pla.../1201173#M2822

On reddit there is a progrock forum where you can find some playlists:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/progrockmusic/

Playlists.net was a good site for playlist sharing:

    http://playlists.net/

In spotify you can also seach for example "Prog rock" and then some playlists pop up. Unfortunatly Spotify doens't promote these specialised lists, they don't appear on their homepage. So i can only promote these lists on the sites i mentioned and on this board.

JAZZW. Thanks for the info, like I said I would probably never have come by these without your input. It is greatly appreciated.

Spotify have just released new machine generated playlists which include dynamic prog playlists. Users 'Particle detector' automatically generates these playlists based on what seems like some pretty effective analysis of the genre (this user is the Spotify artificial intelligence algorithm) and adjusted weekly so are fresh. They tend to contain a good mix of familiar and new tracks and worth a listen, and typically 3 types of computer generated playlists "the sounds" (general prog playlists), "the edge" (compiled from recent less known music that Spotify users who mostly listen to prog artists), "the pulse" (compiled from popular music currently being listened to by Spotify users who mostly listen to prog artists). I have found a number of new artists / tracks with these dynamic playlists.

    Some examples:
The Sound of Italian Prog: https://open.spotify.com/user/thesou...hi5q74Q58yt1mU
The Edge of crossover Prog: https://open.spotify.com/user/partic...jzwtxLTMkwNwsM

Also - I have a comprehensive Spotify playlist of modern prog (post 2000) of songs I find interesting: https://open.spotify.com/user/124186...2wOjb1mgUijXQd

@Zaragon: The Suomi Prog playlist was updated this year and includes your suggestion! Thanks again

@Zaragon 's Grandma's Rocking Chair is missing from the Suomi prog list and I think Hey Hey Hey, the current opener of this PL does not belong there. Just FYI

Blues Section is not really prog, you mean? I included them because of this line in Discogs: "Two legendary Finnish progressive rock groups were founded in 1969 from the remains of Blues Section: Wigwam (3) and Tasavallan Presidentti." And i liked the song!

OK, I did not know that, I just went by my first listen. No intent to step on any toes however! It sounded like a straight up blues rock and I could not discern any prog elements, hence my comment!
Another question - browsing your PLs (of which there are a ton, btw !!), your musical tastes have shifted from prog? Just curious is all.
And when you a PL is *** 70 I assumed all songs were from the 70s but I guess some of it is new music as well (listening to the Japanese PL and I saw some 2015 tracks!)

I love some of your free jazz PLs, tons to listen to and discover, how do you have the time and not to mention, patience, to curate so many PLs? Really swell !!

@cannon: Agreed, it's not really prog. But if you read the long title of the playlist, theres also psychedelic in it. But it's ok, you can't like all the songs.

When its says Prog 70, it should be all songs from the 70s, if theres songs from 2015 its a mistake. Let me know which ones and i will remove them.

There are several reasons why i have the time to create these lists, i work 3 days a week, we don't have kids, i stopped drinking alcohol so i have alot of time available for this project!
I've been listening to music since i was 14, i'm now 45. I was a dj and worked in a record shop, so music is a big part of my life (like all people on this forum i guess).
When i started with Spotify in 2014 i wanted to put all my ideas and creativity in these playlists, about 2 years later i knew how to make good lists. What i like about Spotify is that i still find good songs daily. I did not expect that when i joined in 2014. And now in 2020 there's alot more music available on Spotify then back then.

The Japanese PL had some 2015 songs in it. Dont know if that is a remaster date but the artist page says album was 2015 released!

Its a boon for people like me to have someone like you sweat these lists out while we take full advantage of them! God bless Google for turning me here when I searched for "eclectic prog rock playlists"

And I guess, judging from your PLs, you are a genre no-bar listener? Maybe I will discover something there too, wish I could get you to curate some metal genres into these sort of PLs !!

These playlists are awesome and are helping me getting to know an enormous amount of previously unknown (to me) bands and artists. Thank you so much! <3

How can I find fusion playlists? I typed in "fusion playlists", "jazz rock playlists" and "jazz rock fusion playlists" to no avail. Thanks a lot.

Wow! I think I just discovered the Spotify motherload! Spotify Playlists. I just found this thread because I wanted to post about Meidad Zaharia's playlists on Spotify, which I just discovered and think are great, and in searching for a thread in which to mention it, I found Jazz Whatever's playlists, which also look exceptional! I can't believe the amount of prog that I never would have found on Spotify if not for these playlists!

Yes, it was me who once started a thread called "Shuffle Play Is an Abomination," and I still think it is as far as shuffling tracks on albums that I want to listen to in whole. But for discovering music that's new to me, I now see how useful they can be. Also as a way of finding music I'm already familiar with, but couldn't find on Spotify for some reason. For example, for some reason I couldn't find Ange on Spotify, but now I see it in the French Prog playlists. Also, some playlists are meant to be listened to on Shuffle Play (like Meidad's) and some aren't (like Jazz Whatever's).

I can see that Spotify is going to be keeping me even busier than it already was!

Also, I would love to see an answer to rapidfirerob's question above, about fusion playlists. I'd also like to find a playlist of Polish prog, such as SBB. I see Jazz Whatever mentions some resources above, which I'll try.

    re: shuffle vs albums
Meidad's playlists on shuffle have been awesome and have used them when I am on Spotify, which admittedly is rarely.

I have a pandora station where I have entered all 700+ different artists i have in my physical collection. I prefer the Pandora station b/c not only do I get my artists - it does a good job of suggestions - yeah sometimes shuffles become awkward - but for these ears - its mostly still awesome.

When I want an album - my collection is still out and about - both physical CDs and my FLAC copies.

For example - without Pandora shuffle and suggestions, I would not have found my current obsession:

The Budos Band outta Staten Island.
