Pat Mastelotto Innerviews interview on King Crimson, Stick Men, O.R.k. & More

    Hey everyone,

My interview with Pat Mastelotto is out, covering his work with King Crimson, Stick Men, Mr. Mister, Trey Gunn, Kimmo Pohjonen, Markus Reuter, O.R.k. and much more. It's one of those "life, the universe and everything" pieces, traversing both the personal and professional realms. It's one of the most intimate looks at a musician Innerviews has ever run. It's the result of six months of ongoing conversations with Pat and offers a fascinating and unique look at one of the most storied drummers in rock history.

Great interview - as usual. I particularly enjoyed the bit about his relationship with Bill Bruford during the double-trio era. Must have been uncomfortable at first, but Pat seems a really nice guy and complemented Bill's style well, and that probably ended up making some kind of sense to Bill.

I read, "the most stoned drummer in rock history".

I haven't yet read the interview but I will.

    Great interview, thanks!

He has so many irons in the fire that he never even got around to mentioning a couple of his projects that I've been meaning to check out, Naked Truth and KoMaRa.

Thanks. Love that part about the first meeting with Bruford.
Also interesting the part about the Robert Fripp-David Sylvian tour.

"“Fallen Angel” and “Exiles” are two other new additions we added in April, paying tribute to John Wetton."

I was listening to Larks' last week and thinking I'd really love to see Exiles make it into the setlist. Glad to see it has, but looking at the set lists from this summer, it doesn't look like it makes it to the stage too often.

"This band could also tear up “Cat Food,” “Larks' Tongues in Aspic IV,” “FraKctured,” “Lament,” and “Great Deceiver.” "

Cat Food, Lament, and Great Deceiver are all on my short list of songs I want to see revived, so I'm glad someone in the band is with me.

"I did the BPM&M record, chopping up and mixing the blows and outtakes from those rehearsals with Tony, Adrian and Robert."

Wow. Listening to this now. Anil, thanks for bringing it my attention. I mean, that probably wasn't your highest priority with this interview, but thanks.

I don't mean to torture you but there is a Japanese edition with more music too. :-)

Believe it or not, I have a second brand new interview with Pat Mastelotto in partnership with Markus Reuter for you today. This one focuses on their truly impressive recent album 'Face' -- possibly the most complex piece of rock music ever created, including 385 bars of music woven together from more than 200 audio tracks. It's a great story about how you construct something this involved, as well as their friendship and musical relationship. You'll also read how they integrated contributions from Fabio Trentini, Tim Motzer, Adrian Benavides, Steven Wilson, Michael Bernier, Luca Calabrese, and many others. Find it here: http://www.innerviews.org/inner/pat-...-markus-reuter

Thanks. I gave the boys a few bucks at bandcamp for this one; I'll be absorbing it for a while, and then I'll check out the Japanese version.

Both interviews were excellent, thank you! I've met them both a few times at Stick Men shows and they are friendly, excited to talk music and very generous with their time.

At the risk of overcommunicating, I want to have everyone know that Face is not just a $50 CD, but a regular album too, including iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/de/album/face/id1202221601

They do have that $50 CD available, but I didn't mean to link to it to make it sound like that's the only way you could get it.
