At my age I still have about a milk crates worth of a porn "collection"..Yes my wife has always been aware of it , and it used to be about 5 crates..everything from some 60-70's Playboy to the Hustler with Jackie O, Penthouse , Oui, Over 40, Big and Fat and some really hardcore Swedish mags with Seka, John Holmes , Vanessa Del Rio and more..Thank you Hugh for starting it all, RIP....Will have to pull out the crate this weekend and reminisce...

My choice of "reading" was Penthouse over Playboy, but TBH, I couldn't stand Hustler... It was all too crass and really horrifically dirty (or it seemed to me as a teenager)

I'm glad I didn't dive down the dirty porn alley too soon (not that I ever really did, mind you)...
I preferred more romantic & classy stuff (the girls I was dating had David Hamilton soft porn on their bedroom walls)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Just a note to you, something to think about. When my dad passed away two years ago I inherited his box of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues and a few Playboys.

I listed them for sale on Amazon, and have gotten about $15 each for almost every one of them!

Here's a nice summation of why Hugh Hefner was important.

I know, but at this point I want to hold on to it..I tried selling my small VHS porn collection years ago (Behind The Green Door, Seka Is Tara, Handful of Diamonds & Olde Time Erotica # 2), didn't even get a bite..Maybe down the road..I have an old friend who indeed has an entire collection from the 1st issue on..

You might want to rephrase that.

Last night while thinking of Hefner's legacy, I went through an entire box of Kleenex........................................... .....and a whole bottle of lotion.

To strike a discordant note, to me the Hugh Hefner is most interesting as a sort of symbol for the betrayal of the original counterculture dream.

At least among its intellectual vanguard, the counterculture was supposed to be a new way of doing things--transcending class and capitalism itself. It quickly became something else entirely and was co-opted by corporations who were quite happy with the new consumption-based amorality even as the hippies curdled into yuppies.

The economic structures the counterculture had yearned to overturn (or at least ignore) became cultural dogma far more pervasive than religious power of the medieval days and the state power of the 17-20th centuries had been able to pull off.

I also find it strange that while Bill Cosby is lambasted Hugh Hefner is celebrated.

I don't generally endorse speaking ill of the dead or obnoxiously over-intellectualizing what has been a pretty whimsical conversation so far, but still. (And before anyone thinks that is some born again Southern Baptist periodical spitting on Hefner's grave, Current Affairs is a socialist magazine.)

I'm sorry, did Hugh Hefner drug women and then rape them? I must have missed that story.

According to one of Hef's ex-girlfriends he commonly plied them with ludes or as Hef called them, "thigh-openers".

Lined up with apparently no idea what they were getting into and then no way to get out.

I'm not trying to pile on here. I usually don't like going negative in obit threads. But it sounds like his "girlfriends" were treated rather poorly.

At 10 years old, Ms. Shields starred and appeared nude in the movie Pretty Baby. The Playboy spread was just a natural extension of that.
