Sorry to hear this. John Abercrombie was one of my all-time favorite jazz guitarists. Rest in peace.

I'm very sorry to read this.

I saw him a few times and always enjoyed his work. He has FIVE DECADES of nearly all great work on ECM to enjoy.

The last time I saw him was with John Surman, Drew Gress and JackDeJohnette; they were great and I met Surman face to face for the first time and he gave the go-ahead to "Flashpoint"!!

Was hoping it wasn't true. John was a prime exponent of the school of "less is more."

It does happen even with jazz musicians unfortunately. A few years ago there was a hoax announcement of Horace Silver passing away that fooled at least one of my friends, before it happened for real.

Abercrombie's output was always worthwhile. I love many of his releases from Gateway to Characters. RIP. Here's a obit from Guitar World.

    RIP.
I was lucky to have seen him once at Blues Alley, 2007 I think.
ECM and John Abercrombie made beautiful music.

This is a very sad loss. Abercrombie was always a favorite of mine, since I first discovered Timeless in 1975. He and Terje Rypdal, whom I discovered around the same time, were also my "gateway" into the world of ECM. Got to see Abercrombie live a couple of times in the '90s in trio format--once with organ and once with bass.

Besides being a terrific record, this is one of my all-time favorite album covers:

Bummer. I love that laid back, slightly space-y jazz thing he was doing in the 70s.

I realize I don't actually own any of his solo rekkids. Must do something about that!

    RIP

RIP, what a great musical life.

Can some of you who might be familiar with his catalog recommend what you think is essential (and as always the case with ECM, in print).

Anyone recall the late-60s jazz-rock band he played in and recorded with prior to Dreams? I'm drawing a blank.

Jeez, he was on a zillion things. But a late-60s fusion jazz band? Not listed.

Sure you're not thinking of Foreplay with Larry Coryell?

I'm not familiar with EVERYTHING he did by any means, but I can recommend the following:
    • Timeless (1975)
    • Gateway (1975)
    • The Pilgrim and the Stars (1975)
    • Sargasso Sea (1976)
    • Characters (1978)
    • Eventyr (1981)
    • Getting There (1988)

He was very consistent musically and artistically, like his contemporaries Bill Frisell, John Scofield and Pat Metheny
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone

I saw him about 5 or so years ago at Vermont Jazz Center in my hometown of Brattleboro Vermont. He looked a bit frail but played like a true master. He also had a great sense of humor and told some very funny stories between songs.
I also saw him many years ago with Ralph Towner and I highly recommend the album they did together, "Sargasso Sea".

Not prior to but could be this, recorded in the early 70s:

Ironically, "leaving the planet" is the very opposite of what he's done.

From different periods/groups (to give you an overall flavor over 40 years)

    Timeless (trio with Hammer/DeJohnette)
    Gateway (trio with Holland/DeJohnette)
    M (first quartet)
    Night (quartet with Brecker/Hammer/DeJohnette)
November (trio with Marc Johnson and Peter Erskine)
Open Land (sextet -expanded from his organ trio)
Can 'n' Mouse (quartet he recorded and played with a lot since 2000)

A few selected ECMs as a sideman (or co-lead)

    Jack DeJohnette - Untitled
    Jack DeJohnette - New Rags
    Abercrombie/Towner - Sargasso Sea
    Dave Liebman - Lookout Farm
Charles Lloyd - Hyperion with Higgins
Enrico Rava - The Pilgrim and the Stars
    John Surman - Brewster's Rooster
    Colin Walcott - Grazing Dreams
    Kenny Wheeler - Deer Wan

I think most of these titles are readily available at this point (M is part of a box set) with the exception of the Liebman (super HTF) and the DeJohnette albums never on CD.

Speaking of, one obvious but still not released reissue project would be the DeJohnette albums Untitled and New Rags never on CD (to my knowledge) coupled with Pictures and perhaps New Directions (and Live in Europe).

Don't know the whole catalogue in depth, but I was initially very well hooked by the guitar/violin-led quartet on Cat 'N Mouse, which is a superb quiet rainy-day selection (and its followup Class Trip). His last album Up and Coming from earlier this year was an excellent work in a more straightforwardly jazzy vein.

This is reminding me how much more I need to explore. That man could do understatement like nobody's business.

    RIP

last time I saw him was as a trio with Coryell and a much younger Brasilian singer... She's now the last one alive.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Deer Wan, and November are great for starters. There's also a great but little known 2 disc set by Mark Egan called As We Speak featuring Abercrombie and Danny Gottlieb. Sorry to hear John has passed on.
