    Sonar (Calkwalk) question

    So, my set-up is:

Windows XP running Sonar 7.0 Professional

...After having my computer in storage for 3 months, I set-up everything and got the attached pop-up.

I can launch ever other program on my computer but for some reason Sonar will not launch.

I reached out to Calkwalk support and they only said "check our forum"...THAT was a complete waste of time.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I run sonar on XP and I have never seen an error like this. I'd try starting your computer in safe mode and see if you can get it to run that way. My sense is some directory or service Sonar uses in XP has gotten mixed up, but I'm really not sure of the fix.

Is your machine online (i.e. networked to the Internet)?
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Also, Ephemeral Sun: it's a thing and we like making things that might be your thing: https://ephemeralsun.bandcamp.com

    No, it's not.

..trying to start it in "safe mode" sounds like a possible plan....thanks

I haven't started up my XP machine (with Sonar) for many months now (using Reaper on an iMac). I've never see that error message though.

    Good answer

I used Sonar with XP for many, many years and it worked pretty well. You might consider a reinstall of the Sonar base software.

Currently I'm using Sonar with Windows 7 and an offline machine, and it's worked pretty well. XP was a great OS for many years but it has gotten pretty old. You might consider Win7. Not crucial obviously, just a thought for you.

Good luck with Safe mode, I do hope that works for you!

Sadly, after two moves, I have lost my original Sonar disc's...still haven't gotten to try "safe mode" yet.

Hey - I don't know if this would help or not, but I did some poking around and it sounds like it may not be a specific Sonar issue but possibly a problem with the MS Visual C++ stuff. I'm seeing various videos and whatnot that suggest this can affect a wide range of processes and applications.

It may not help, but might point you in a particular direction. Here's just one example (for Win7-10 but may still be relevant).

no guarantees but there was a hotfix for this (kb884538) if you can find it. have you tried starting the program as administrator? have you updated Visual C++, it may be corrupted or leftovers from another version might be conflicting. it's not Cakewalk

....an update.....for anyone that might have been following my ordeal....

Bit the bullet and bought a new computer w/Windows 10, Sonar Professional and a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20...all set up and running smooth.

WOW...steep learning curve from Sonar 7.0 to Professional !!....any tips from PE users of Sonar Pro are welcome to share their insights with me via PM or on this thread.

^^ I was wanting to do what you did via upgrades. My XP/Sonar rig has been running flawlessly and I'm just not sure what the advantages of upgrading would be. Do your recordings sound better? Is there better performance? Better plug-ins? I'm just reluctant to upgrade since getting all of the parameters for buffering, latency, etc. to be set to my satisfaction took a long time to get right! I imagine great strides have been made with software and hardware, though since I put mine together. I'm just dreading the learning curve!

I haven't really started to record anything new yet.

    Is there better performance?

YES !! computer starts very quickly and Sonar launches almost immediately.

    Better plug-ins?

Yes, Sonar Pro came with a lot of cool VST's none of which I have had a chance to dive into yet.

I loved my XP/Sonar 7.0/Delta 1010 set-up. However, since I was experiencing a fatal C+++ errors which I could not seem to solve, I HAD to make the leap. My friend is also using XP/Sonar 7 and he too is having severe issues while trying to use sonar (drop-outs, freezing, etc.)

    Yeah, me too...
