    Prog God 2017 is...

    ...Carl Palmer!!!

(Because, apparently, Robert Fripp keeps saying "no".)

This is one of those stupid awards that will get more ridiculous with each year they award it and start struggling to pick people. And the 2025 Prog God is Billy Sherwood.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

The 'Prog God' award is an absolute embarrassment. The cherry on top of an entire awards show that is also an embarrassment.

A pointless, meaningless, and nonsensical distinction. Robert is quite right to refuse it. Although: does he even acknowledge its existence, and thus dignify it, to the point of specifically refusing it? Or does he completely ignore it, as something even less important or relevant than what drawer he keeps his socks in?

And what did Carl Palmer do the last year to deserve this title?

Eh. It sells magazines and gets people talking. Don't take it seriously.

To me, the whole idea of these awards is ridiculous. Biggest fan base wins it every time.

How many people would choose Palmer over Emerson and Lake to give that award to? Or do you have to be alive to get the award?

Yeah, it's basically like a "living legend" award. I don't have a problem with it other than the ridiculous name.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about it. The guy was (obv) a major part of ELP, was a legit superstar at one time, and the award is more of a recognition of the person's legacy and legendary status within prog circles. To be taken in the right spirit (of fun and recognition) and not get too worked up about. Heck, Peter Gabriel (who is still A-Level within the industry) showed up to claim a prog god award, so he obviously wasn't embarrassed and didn't think it was beneath him. The whole thing sounds like good fun, it would be neat to be a fly on the wall for some of those conversations during the mixer, etc. The mag once described a scene at one of the ceremonies where Emerson was seated in a corner chatting with Hammill and both were soon joined by Palmer, and eventually Wetton. The writer joked something like, "The birth of a new prog super group, PHEW!" I'm sure similiar scenes with those four, Gabriel, Wakeman, Anderson, Hackett, etc have played out at each ceremony over the last few years. So, it may not be as culturally relevant as the Academy Awards (*barf*) but who cares; just sounds like a good reason to have a bit of fun and give a bit of recognition.

If someone is a living legend, isn't an award for it superfluous/pointless?

Why does anybody need to be recognized for being recognized?
