David Bowie - A New Career In a New Town (11 CD Box Set) due in Sept.

    David Bowie / A New Careeer In A New Town 1977-1982 / 13LP or 11CD box.

Following 2015’s Five Years and last year’s Who Can I Be Now?, Parlophone will in September release A NEW CAREER IN A NEW TOWN*[1977-1982] an 11CD or 13LP*David Bowie*box set that includes remastered versions of arguably his most critically acclaimed albums, including the so-called ‘Berlin Trilogy’ of Low, Heroes and Lodger and 1980’s Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), his last studio album for*RCA.

In addition to the*remastered version, the box set will also feature 1979’s Lodger album (which delivered the hits D.J. and Boys Keep Swinging) newly REMIXED by Tony Visconti. This remix was started “with David’s blessing” before his passing in January last year. Visconti has*revisited the original multi-tracks and remixed*the album “to better highlight the album’s*nuances”. This version of the album will*also feature newly ‘remixed’ artwork featuring unseen images from the original*cover photographic session from the archive of*the Estate of photographer*Duffy. This remix of Lodger is exclusive to this box set (along with the Re:Call 3 compilation, more of which below) and also won’t be available in any of the digital packages.
The live album*Stage (which was issued in 1978 between Heroes and Lodger) is included here in both the original version (exclusively on yellow vinyl in the LP box) and the 2005 reissue; the latter restored the original running order and added some bonus tracks. In fact. two more (previously unreleased) bonus tracks are added to the version in this new box set – The Jean Genie and Suffragette City –*taking the track count to 22.

The remix of Lodger is much welcome, as the original mix is very muddy. I hope the mastering retains some sense of dynamic range as well.

What's the need for all three? I assume there's some albums unique to each set?

I don't know about this. On the one hand, it covers my absolute favorite Bowie era (Low/Heroes/Stage). On the other hand, it looks like an awful lot of padding and duplication to make 5 albums into 11 CDs. Is there a track listing posted anywhere?

I am much more excited by this one than the previous boxset last year. although their is similar repetition the different versions of stage are much more varied than the different versions of david live because of the chronological sequencing they did on the original stage. still don't think it should be doubled but slightly better reasoning.

also recall 3 has way more goodies than recall 2(which was almost exclusively fairly pointless single edits)

one thing I don't really get is why not have baal as the separate EP and stick the heroes tracks on recall. yes it would have caused some heroes exhaustion maybe but would have been nice to get the baal artwork and packaging (though I am sure it will be in the book)

I am also pretty disappointed at the lack of the cat people extended version which is supposedly out there it is one of my favorite bowie tracks so would have liked to get that version (also missing the single edit but less worried about that, I also have it on cd on some compilation)

Not without the tracks that are exclusive to the 2017 version.

Where are the bonus tracks from the old Ryko CDs? No "Some Are," All Saints," "Abdulmajid"?

these boxes are supposed to only include items released officially at the time. although they have bent that rule a few times already (like the extended live shows). probably holding em off for super deluxe individual album sets to come or something.

This seems as likely a place for this as anywhere else:

I dunno if I need this...apart from adding "Rebel Rebel," it's the identical track list to the current version of Stage.

Yes but it's a shame they couldn't add the songs in 2004 when this was last re-released and expanded.

Not quite- 'Sound And Vision' was only played here on this tour.

The strange thing here is that the Ryko box Sound And Vision remained in print but all these extra tracks went AWOL, despite being companions of a sort. Then again S&V is an eccentric set; neither fish nor fowl, with strange track choices galore. It would have been a better set had it included all those Ryko extras here instead of the albums, I think, a la Dylan's Bootleg Series or something. It might even have kept all those songs in print!

'Some Are' last appeared on a CD given away with a newspaper in the UK around ten years ago.

I've since read that there is something fishy about the provenance of those tracks, and that they may have been much later recordings passed off as Berlin-era outtakes.

The collection All Saints had some of the instrumental extras on the Ryko/EMI discs, but for some reason 'Some Are' only appeared in a version by Philip Glass.

Given it two listens, neither very closely (up and around the house doing stuff). On first blush, I'm not noticing a whole lot of differences with Stage. The recording sounds better to me, more immediate and less distant than Stage. Not sure which one I'll prefer over time, but I'm glad to have both.
