PBS Special on American Music of the 1920s

It you're into the old timey stuff or even just curious, this might be required viewing. For the next three Tuesdays in May, American Epic will cover the decade in which ordinary Americans began to record music.

Cool! Thanks for the heads-up. I love any pre-war music and listen to it more than just about anything else.

Watched episode one last night. Very good, but I was hoping for more than an hour.

Yeah, I really liked the Carter Family footage. It's nicely done & edited.

Was pleased that they devoted so much time to essentially only two artists. The musician perspectives are fine--particularly Musslewhite--but largely impressionistic; I hope ensuing episodes will have some scholars.

I was pleasantly surprised to see interview clips with Honeyboy Edwards. He was a contemporary of Robert Johnson and was, allegedly, with him the night he was murdered. He died a couple years ago at about 95 and was still touring. In fact, his last recordings were on a my good friend Tim Woods' CD "The Blues Sessions," where he contributed two songs.

We watched episode one tonight and really enjoyed it. The footage of those artists was just amazing and I'm really looking forward to the second episode, especially the segment on Charlie Patton.

After seeing this, I now know where the term "record album" came from. It was originally like a photo album...a book with sleeves containing several 78 records.

^I think the first album close to how we would recognise it now was The Voice Of Frank Sinatra, from 1948. And that too had already been released in the way you describe.

This programme is broadcast in the UK on BBC4 starting tonight at 10pm.

That's about it. I don't really care for music that sounds "old timey."

When Louis Armstrong's 'West End Blues' was released in the UK in 1929, it was with another artist (jazz guitarist Eddie Lang) and note the label it was on:

The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers got UK releases on a label which later got relaunched as a 'progressive' one:

As did the Memphis Jug Band:

I wonder if we'll hear anything about Bix Beiderbeke.

That should be interesting for my dad. But alas he hates computers.

Unless I have to find some information for him.

But he won't touch them with a ten foot pole.
