Interestingly this originally appeared as "Alan Key" on Pierre Moerlen's Gong album "Second Wind" in 1988. Renaming it "Allan Qui ?" was brilliant - not sure if it was meant as a tribute to Allan (from Hansford Rowe, who wrote the tune) from the start... On the 1988 Ake Zieden (from the Swedish band Tribute) played lead.

OT: Downwind will be re-released soon by Esoteric.
As you might know "Shadows Of" is Holdsworth's own new version of the title-track from "Velvet Darkness". In an interview from 1978 he explained he re-recorded this song because he wanted to show that it could be done different. He thinks this version is much better, although not perfect (of course, Holdsworth never thought of his work to be perfect). In the same interview he said he liked playing in Gong, although he didn't know anything about flying saucers or sypersonic teapots. But he like the bizarre look of the musicians on music. On the other side he didn't like the "Gong-madness", the constant conflicts. And he hated "Expresso II" (I believe it was one of the albums he had listed on his site being the ones he wished he hadn't recorded).
I got that one on my shelve too, although dated on August 26th, based on http://www.calyx-canterbury.fr/bands...oldsworth.html
Funny to see the actual poster mentions August 27th though:

I also have a concert from Nancy, October 25th (also not the best quality).
You may be right. I think the forum was taken down a long time ago. I do remember he indeed mentioned the live Gong, next to Velvet Darkness, Paz, Jeff Watson and some more.
But as he mentioned it in this interview I thought it would be logical if he wished he hadn't recorded this one too.
The 2 great tracks on Downwind are 2. Crosscurrents (6:11) 3. Downwind (12:30) and there they re-use the ostinato from "Expresso" (Gazeuse album).
I like Ross Records guitar here, unfortunately he had stage fright, so he didnt have a career.
