Prog bands with fans from other genres

Here's some examples(I'll list the band first then the other genre that is not prog second:

    Strawbs-folk

    Genesis-pop

    Jethro Tull- folk-heavy metal

    Porcupine Tree-metal

    Dream Theater- metal

    Soft Machine- jazz

    Who else?

I know at least 4 people who listen to nothing but singer/songwriter stuff like Mayer, Mraz etc.

The only exception is Hogarth M, which they love???

I've even played them Gazpacho & nope.

Nektar was a band on the periphery of prog that seemed to have a legion of non-prog fans. Ask the NEARFest guys about that!

Heinz Rudolf Kunze a German singer/songwriter (or something else) admits liking them. Actually Matthias Ulmer plays keyboards in his band.

Rush. They have a pretty big fan base because of their hard rock background, plus their prog background.

Ozric Tentacles attracts some of the jam band crowd

I would go as far as to say that most of the fans of 'prog' bands are not even prog fans. Is everyone who goes to a Rush concert a prog fan, or just a Rush fan?

I'm sure there are lots of Umphrey's McGee fans who aren't into any other prog. But more of them MIGHT BE if UM had played at...never mind...

This is pretty interesting, Steve. I'm not sure Gazpacho is the band I'd expect them to go for, but it's interesting to try to think of others. How about Roy Harper? Maybe Kate Bush?

Except for the fact that none of these are prog bands. Jethro Tull has awlays been a hard rock folk band. Strawbs has always been a folk-rock band. PT is an inde trippy band and Soft Machine underground, fusion, art rock. DT has always been metal imo.

I grew up in the land of Rush and had NO idea till I got on the internet that they were popular amongst prog fans and considered a prog band. I had a shit-load of friends in to prog, and not one of them were huge Rush fans, if at all.

I'd say most of the big prog bands have plenty of fans who aren't necessarily prog rock fans. I was talking to somebody at a Yes concert a few years ago about progressive rock and he didn't know what the hell I was talking about.

My Deadhead second cousins listen to a lot of Ozric Tentacles. It was all my doing, I played them for their dad, who's my cousin and my age. He said his kids would love them and he burned some of my stuff for them. Now they're hooked.

Normally all they listen to is The Dead and Phish.

I'm sure most Yes fans don't even know the band abandoned Jon when he was ill, let alone that Yes is prog.
