Mogwai plays "Atomic' - North American Tour 2017

    http://mogwai.co.uk/

Tour starting in LA tomorrow night. Got tickets for the Toronto show on the 30th. Checked out Atomic on youtube, and definitely a very proggy album, heavier on the keyboard sounds. My spidey senses tell me this will be an incredible show to see. Atomic is the soundtrack to film, and apparently the band will perform it while the movie plays. Having seen these guys before...an astonishing concert power I've rarely seen in my life... I can't imagine this tour being anything short of spectacular.

    Check out Atomic. https://youtu.be/aIjjB2KLCJQ

I've got my tix for the DC show later this month (the 28th). These dudes have yet to deliver less than an amazing show, and it'll be great to hear all of Atomic in one sitting.

    We'll compare notes afterwards!!

Incidentally, speaking of Mogwai and soundtracks...this slightly slipped under the radar, so in case you HADN'T heard about it already...here you go!

Has anyone here been to this show? I am so tempted to go to the NYC show on Sunday, but it will be a hassle to get there and I'm trying to decide if it will be worth it. I really like Atomic, but from the look of it on setlists.fm they don't play much else which leads me to believe this is a very short set. I'd love to see some current reviews.

Well, I'm seeing them tonight in DC, so I should have an answer by tomorrow...

So, I saw the show last night:

If you like/love Atomic, then you should definitely go. They play the full soundtrack live against the film itself. For me, it enhanced my appreciation of the material; some of the tracks I felt were a bit weaker on the album picked up new dimensions when heard against the visuals that inspired them. Not surprisingly, they played damned well. Given the venue, they were slightly quieter than other shows but this is still a full-on electric set.

The film itself isn't exactly Koyannisqatsi (i.e. one for the ages), but is enjoyable enough for what it is.

It is ONLY Atomic though, so it isn't really like a typical Mogwai show. I've seen them several times before so this sort of "specialty" show was actually a real treat...but, you may feel differently.

Oh wow. I do love Atomic, so this is real tempting. If this show was in my back yard it would be a definite yes, but NY is 2 hours away, so instead it will come down to how I feel around 4PM and what's available on stubhub and for what price. How long was the show? And thanks for the review.

I think maybe 80 minutes? The length of the film, more or less. There were some spots where it was the movie by itself and some short bits that weren't on the album.

Two hours is a long drive and I *do* get it...for me, it was kind of a unique presentation by/of the band, and as such it was totally worth it.

Thanks for the review John. To me that's excellent...I've been lucky enough to see their typical or normal set...so this sounds very cool.
I'm glad to have seats, this venue is all standing on floor with limited balcony seating. Sounds like a balcony seating kind of show.

It's definitely a good one to just kick back and take in. The band as a visual element takes a backseat to the film itself.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed a unique rock concert experience! Though i imagine that those standing on the floor saw them perfectly fine, from the balcony, I could barely see the band. Incredible that they were so tight that I often forgot it was a "live" soundtrack....just got absorbed in the sound.visual thing and was blown away. The last 10 minutes were about as glorious as it gets.
This was the kind of experience I go to concerts for.

I saw them last year in Coventry Cathedral. It was packed (Around 2000 people) and a superb show - helped by the fact that the new Cathedral is a fantastic post-war building and made a great setting. (I'm not religious, but still love it.)
