Thread: Prog and Fusion "guess that tune"

Prog and Fusion "guess that tune"

A good friend of mine recorded this video recently, and it's loads of fun!

He's got more than enough chops to pull off any of these tunes.

It's a bit long, but worth it if you have the time.

And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell

    1) Medieval Overture - RtF
    2) Just the Same - Gentle Giant
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone

No 3 is Chick Corea. Sounds like something from My Spanish Heart. Armando's Rhumba?

4-5. Don't know? 6. Heart Of The Sunrise

8 sounds like Watcher Of The Skies

    9 Birds Of Fire

3 is definitely something from My Spanish Heart. I do believe “Armando’s Rhumba” is correct.

I think 4 is PFM. “Appena un po’”?

    1. Return to Forever
    2. Gentle Giant.
    3. Don't know
    4. PFM (yeah pretty sure that's appena un po)
    5.Don't know
    6. Yes-Heart of the sunrise
    7. Don't know
    8. Genesis- watcher of the skies (intro)
    9. Sounds like Mahavishnu Birds of fire
    10. ELP- Barbarian
    11. Sounds like GG-advent of panurge

Kind of lost track after that but I did hear KC "elephant talk" in there somewhere.

Also, around 4:25 it seems to go seamlessly from something by Bruford into Southside of the sky.

5:22 until around the end of that minute is no mystery. Literally…No Mystery, by Return To Forever (Chick Corea). A version is also (for example) in the first World Sinfonia album by Di Meola in the early 90s.

The Poke by Brand X is also sneaked in there.
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone

Wow, very impressive! If I didn't have work to do I could happily listen to the whole thing. So far I recognize the majority of the tunes, but I think Fusion is my stumbling block. The first Corea tune he plays I actually know from a recording of Corea and McFerrin playing/scatting together!

    Correct.

The fifth tune is "Sly" from Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters album. As mentioned above, #7 is "The Poke" by Brand X.

At 1:39 is the second song from Happy the Man's debut (forget the title). After that "Palladium" by Weather Report.

At 2:31 is a tune from Chick Corea's Leprechaun album ("Looking at the World" I think is the title). OK, I should do something else.

3:06 Yes - Close to the Edge pipe organ bit (the bit that made me a prog fan for life!)
6:37 Yes - And You and I (god, I'm terrible at this)
    14:00 Yes - Parallels
    14:22 UK - Rendezvous 6:02
15:32 Happy the Man - The Moon, I Sing (I recognized an obscure one at last!)
15:41 Genesis - The Return of the Giant Hogweed (back to more familiar territory)
17:08 - UK - The Only Thing She Needs

2:49 - Al Di Meola - "Race with Devil on a Spanish Highway"
4:11 - Bill Bruford - "Fainting in Coils"

  14. #14
Those that haven't been guessed yet:

    2:46 - GG, "Proclamation"
3:10 - Yes, the church organ part in "Close to the Edge"
4:30 - Yes, "South Side of the Sky"
6:08 - I don't remember the exact name of the song, but this is from PFM's "Chocolate Kings" album

  15. #15
    Some more:

8:46 - Genesis, "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"
9:27 - Yes, "Heart of the Sunrise"
    9:58 - ELP, "Bitches Crystal"
12:37 - Gentle Giant, "I Lost my Head"
    14:27 - UK, "Rendezvous 6;02"
    16:37 - GG, "Experience"
19:50 - Genesis, "Firth of Fifth"
    20:39 - ELP, "Three Fates"

OK, it was fun to do, but a little disappointing that I only recognized the big-5 stuff and nothing of the more obscure fare. Gotta work a little and then maybe come back to this!

Does anyone know what that is around 1:15:35? I know that's Kayak about four songs earlier.

Nevermind. I figured out it's VDGG. Something from godbluff I think. However, now I'm trying to figure out what 1:21:00 is. It sounds very familar.

1:12:22 “Carousel” by Happy the Man
    1:12:35 ???
    1:12:45 ???
1:13:01 Something by Banco. “La città sottile”?

    1:15:28 ???

1:15:46 trying to remember which Mahavishnu Orchestra tune this is. “The Noonward Race”? Something from The Inner Mounting Flame in any case.
1:15:51 a nice, long excerpt of Yes’ “And You and I”
    1:16:32 ???
    1:16:44 ???
    1:16:57 ???
    1:17:06 ???
    1:17:31 ???
1:17:43 “Pixiland Rag” by Chick Corea

    1:18:46 ???
    1:18:54 ???
    1:19:08 Return to Forever: “Dayride”
1:19:32 I think it’s “Valedictory” by Gentle Giant?
    1:19:45 ???
1:19:53 this one’s going to drive me crazy! I know it, but I can’t place where it comes from! AARGHH!
    1:20:06 ???
    1:20:22 ???
    1:20:34 ???
    1:20:48 “Gravità 9,81” by Arti+Mestieri
1:20:58 well, I guess this is the one you were referring to. It sounds vaguely familiar to me, too, but I can’t quite remember its source.

The one from around 1:21:00 is "night in Tunisia" originally by Dizzy Gillespie. I only finally figured it out because I eventually remembered what it was; it was featured in my history of jazz class in college.

[1:19:53 this one’s going to drive me crazy! I know it, but I can’t place where it comes from! AARGHH!]

See? Now you know what I was going through.

Also, I checked out that song "hope for life" by Kayak on youtube and that's actually not the one in the video. It turns out it's "seranades" from their second album.

Also, the GG you refer to is not "valedictory" but "pantagruel's nativity" from Acquiring the taste.

1:13:30 A bit hard to recognize with the keyboard sound being used, but it is from "Billy the Mountain" by Frank Zappa
    1:13:48 "Homunculus" by Passport
    1:13:53 "Hearts" from Yes 90125
1:15:28 A tiny snippet of "Between the Thighs" by Weather Report
1:16:57 "As Old As You're Young" by Gentle Giant

Given that each snippet is about 10-20 seconds long I can't believe there is an hour of them

Duh! Figured it out. It’s more Kayak! “Chance for a Lifetime,” specifically.
