5,000 Spirits/The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
IdM was earlier, and there were apparently several albums between the two (The Sun Never Sweats, Jap Habit (Live), Bent for the Rent, Tap Dancing and Rock 'n' Roll Creation).
Intravenus de Milo and The Sun Never Sweats are another great one-two punch. The latter boasts some of their proggier titles, including Daze of Knights of Old, The Princess and the Unicorn, The Obelisk, and, of course, the classic Stonehenge.

Ege Bamyasi / Future Days

Tab in the Ocean / Journey to the Center of the Eye
Twice Removed from Yesterday / Bridge of Sighs
Against the Grain / Calling Card
Blue Matter / A Step Further
Who will save the World / Hogwash
Hello / Quo
For Camel I would say mirage/snowgoose.
Peter Gabriel / Peter Gabriel
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off
He was melting after he was scratching but he was scratching after he was in the car.
such was the quality and consistency of REM from their beginnings to New Adventures in HiFi, you could almost make a case for ANY 1-2 punch during that period. Out of Time/AftP are probably their two biggest and most popular records, but personally, my favourite period was just before that, when they were just about to explode from being a cult concern to a major global act. I almost went for Murmur/Reckoning or Lifes Rich Pageant/Document, but after consideration felt Document and Green are my two favourite REM albums and i simply love that era REM.
Soul Mining / Infected by The The
Considering Matt Johnson was still only in his mid 20s by the time he'd released Infected, this was a stupendous feat. Rumours abound that he may be releasing new music under the The The moniker in the near future ... can't come soon enough.
Illusions On A Double Dimple/Spartacus
"and what music unites, man should not take apart"-Helmut Koellen
Steve Morse:
1995 Structural Damage
1996 StressFest
I may have mentioned it before but I think this is an example of a band who's most popular albums(out of time and automatic for the people)were their best. So in that respect I disagree with you somewhat. I still enjoy the ones right before them and actually pretty much all their early stuff but I think they reached their artistic and creative peak the same time they reached their commercial one which is something I can't really say about any other band except maybe the Beatles.
I haven't heard any of their stuff after new adventures in high fi and based on what I have read they are hit and miss with their last one maybe being the best of the later ones.
