Killer band indeed !!!
I couldn't get enough of this stuff in the '70's.....my friends and I would jam on these vamps for HOURS back-in-the-day.
RIP Allan

Oh, so sad. He was excellent with Ponty. A real talent and perfect fit for Ponty's music.
In my mind I can still hear Jean-Luc pronouncing his name with pizazz as he introduced him to the audience.
RIP I have such fond memories of seeing him several times with Zappa.
Sleeping at home is killing the hotel business!
Damn...are you kidding me?! Been on a Ponty kick lately. 2016 won't let up. RIP Allan.
I just watched the clips. That version of "Mirage" was superb. Allan's ARP 2600 solo was sublime. What a special man he was.
I know it is life but my gosh, we have lost so many superb players (George Harrison left us 15 years ago today, by the way.)
That's terrible. Just the other day I scored two JLP albums I somehow didn't already have. I will think of Dr. Zavod as I play them. Rest in peace, Allan.
We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973
Duke Ellington heard Zavod during a trip to Australia, and helped him get established in the states. And Allan had some good things to say about FZ in that short interview clip above.
Great player, RIP. 2016, you can go away now...
Sad news. Enigmatic Oceans is one of my favourite jazz-rock albums, with two great Allan's on it. And indeed Mirage is such a catchy tune!
Never heard his solo-album What's New though.
Allan Zavod played on a rare track from Mark Murdock, called Events In The Sky (recently released on the archive-album Era-2 (and previous on the dowload only Eyes Down).
I can't play this vid, but maybe others can:
Wow...bon voyage...
Another big shock. Jamie Glaser announced this on his FB page. I saw Allan with JL Ponty a number of times. Great, great player. RIP.
I happened to have pulled out Zappa's Guitar album just the other night which Allan is on lots of. Always loved his Rhodes comping behind Frank and his piano solo on Stage vol 4 is one of my fav moments on the whole series.
Need to check him out with Ponty.
Matt.
This is sad news. Just the other night I was looking at a tube video with Allan and other Zappa alumni and now this news breaks. Fakk. I saw him a number of times with Zappa. I'm unsure if he was still in Ponty's band on the occasions I saw JLP in concert but I doubt it. Rest In Power, Allan.
We have lost so many greats this year.
I rank Allan"s lyrical playing right up there with George Duke & Jan Hammer.
RIP AZ
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone
RIP---love that Ponty song and album. Great live version--he's like a mellow Moraz.
Just found out about this today. What a great loss. Loved his collaborations with JL Ponty.
