Just do what I did: Order the darn thing!
I'll tell my wife it is my Christmas gift.

This album and Squire's Fish Out of Water are my two most favorite albums. Ever.
I have no willpower with regards to either.

I pre-ordered this via Amazon UK for $88 about a month ago

there is a Pledgemusic site for this where the box proper was being sold for upwards of $145 or something. glad I waited

there were and are some cool trinkets from Woolfson's stash including test pressings and never released singles etc, the most rare being new vinyl pressings of Eric's Poe production

LPs are perfectly superior to CDs and DVDs

I would really just like the surround - I have the MoFi CD I picked up years ago which sounds great and I find the remix from the 80's pretty awful.

And I still have the original vinyl for the packaging.

But I would like to hear this one in 5.1 so hopefully that will come out separately at some point.

I too think that the surround version is the main reason to get it. I think the 5.1 will be stunning.
I really enjoy both versions of the album. The original has its own charms and is what I started on of course. But the re-mix has some great attributes in my mind.
And yes, I too have my original vinyl.

    For the wall.

I have the initial release of the US LP, the one with the rice paper separating the pages. I also have the CD that had Orson Wells dialog and some reworked guitar solos and that is enough for me, don't need the $100 version, but if it is one of your fav's I can see it being worth it!

I would gladly use the LP as wall art if you Gizmotron and the good Doctor, were part of the display. Luv this album and FOOW as well.

APP is the remaining 'big band' for me without the 5.1 treatment. I wonder if the 5.1 version is the original mix or the later mix. I much prefer the former. Hope this portents for future 5.1 releases.

The version I know is the reworking, so the original seems underdeveloped to me. It appears the 5.1 is of the original, which is disappointing to me.

Where did you see that? I haven't been able to see anything definitive about which version gets the 5.1 treatment.

    Thanks.

This is what I found...a quote by Alan Parsons:

“It’s a great thrill to tell you that this summer, Universal will be releasing the album in a 40th anniversary multi-disc box set including a four-sided vinyl set at 45rpm (amazing quality), 3 CDs – one of which is all-new bonus material and a 5.1 surround mix on Blu-ray. The surround version will be a totally new mix which I hope to complete within the next few weeks.“

So, I guess we don't really know what he means by "totally new." Not really definitive, is it?

What does definitive mean? The 5.1 mix is from the original multichannel tapes, and as far as I know Alan has resisted 5.1 mixes up to now. Did he do it, or did Wilson.

I had the rice paper vinyl back in my college days but lost it in a move. It still pisses me off. I might be inclined to get the new vinyl if they do the inserts right.

Well, OnAir has been in 5.1 for years and I read him say that he'd love to do surround mixes but that it was 'up to the studio'. I forget exactly what was done to update the mix since I only listen to the original - more 'modern' guitar sound comes to mind.

Apparently the stand alone bluray release is days away now.

Amazon sucks, still no info on the overall release options.

Got the 5.1 bluray. It is indeed a 'new' mix. Sounds more like the remaster than the original. Everything is crystal clear, though there is a bit of hiss in places (may have always been on the tapes, just unheard). Overall very good, though the low end on the mobile fidelity version is still better.
