Thread: Cardiacs--where to start?

  1. #2401
Here's a thing. When I joined the band James Larcombe dared me to play that solo as it appears on the record. He even gave me a CD in which he had sort of isolated it and slowed it down for me to work it out.
(Tim had said 'just do what you like' but when I told him I was going to attempt it like on the record, he was really into it)
I gave it a damned good shot. I practiced for ages. The results are on the, currently un-edited, footage of the Astoria show in 2005.
If that ever comes out you can judge how close I got.

It's cool just thinking about the attempt.

He has his own message board (or did - haven't been there in awhile). He's got followers who adore him and really do treat his words as gospel. Based on my own experiences there, they do acquire much of what he says is good. That said, most of them are younger (35 and under) and the majority of them don't buy anything except used vinyl, anyway. A few buy new CDs, but it's a very small number. So while there definitely would be sales if a particular review was very positive, I do not think it would have been that many of them.

I know this must have been discussed 37 pages ago, but this guy does a shockingly decent recreation of the solo, especially considering his instrument...

    https://soundcloud.com/david-minnick...cardiacs-cover

the whole thing is great, but fwd to about 3:20 to hear the guitar solo recreation.

Getting back to "Sing" for a moment - aside from the millions of creative and amazing little things about this album - just how AMAZING is the guitar playing and parts? I mean from a playing perspective, the tones are just ravishing, and the playing is frighteningly ferocious, giving any punk or metal band a run for their money. The next time you listen to this beast, try to focus on the just the guitar playing and try to imagine if this was the only album The Cardiacs ever made, I think that Tim and Jon would go down in history as absolute geniuses on that instrument for their performances. I dunno, this is just how I feel. Its so easy to take this stuff for granted, but go ahead and have a go at "Bell Clinks" and see where that takes you.

One of the many things I love about it is that for such a long album, virtually every track contains memorable melodies or sections of music. That's rare in a double studio album like that. There's nothing that even approaches what is commonly called 'filler'... and there are moments on it that I can only describe as breathtaking (not a word I throw around lightly). It's just amazing. All of their music is, but that one rises to the top for me.

    Exactly!.
An álbum from 1996, right? ... man!!.
