Sit down for this one- Rachel Flowers covering Birds of Fire

Here is what Rachel had to say about it
Here's a wild Mahavishnu tune I covered in one day!

I memorized most of the solos, too. This is very close to the record!

All of the guitar parts were played on the Marble Head using the Vox amp with the Lewitt mic. Then for the drums and violin tracks, I played on the Yanaha m06. I also used one of the clavinets off of the Korg SV-1, and the Rhodes from the Nord 2 HA-88. I played on the fretted bass using the bass pod, and the synth parts were done on the Little Phatty. The gongs were from the Garritan Instant Orchestra "Earth Metal Percussion."

I put a whole bunch of wild effects on some of the instruments. For another instance of the gong track, I added a flange effect. (I first put a mono preset in both tracks.) Then for the synth solo, and violin tracks, I added a distortion effect off of the Cakewalk Ampsim (I think I used "British Crunch" on the synth solo, and "Fuzz 1" for the violin tracks.)

Anyway, I had a lot of fun doing this one.

Great stuff. And doing violin and drums on keyboards, without it is noticable, is fantastic.

At this point Rachel must be the greatest tribute/cover musician of all time. And that may be her destiny. If so that's fine. But I really hope she can hone her skills as a music composer. Imagine what she could do if she mastered her writing skills? Wow, it would be even more incredible than what she's doing now. If she could do that, she'd be the next Beethoven, or Jimi Hendrix. Regardless she's great!

    Amazing.

I was mesmerized with the no-longer-available-on-youtube clip of her doing Steve Reich's "Piano Phase".... which, for anyone who doesn't know, is a piece for two performers! Needless to say, she played both parts. (And as I recall, it was a spontaneous performance with no prior rehearsal.)

THEN, I saw the clip of her doing "Karn Evil 9" INCLUDING the last speeding-up "steel drum" synth part!!

Is there anything she CAN'T do?!

Ok, she's hugely talented, but why wouldn't I just put on the original? I do wish she'd record some originals.

Great stuff, ...I don't see any quality difference to the original...it feels warm, not like a typical copy of something.

In my mind, the most exciting, the most talented musician on this planet, whose scope and vision covers the entire gambit, from European classical to American jazz to progressive rock and fusion--Rachel Flowers!!! And barely over 20 years old!

This promoted John McLaughlin to comment -"Not just one, but five virtuoso performances captured on this track and you learned and played it in one day! Rachel, I have been following you for some time now and am constantly amazed by the music you make - this has shown off your talents on a whole new level. Brilliantly executed and more than that, you have captured the verve, excitement and sheer power of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. No-one has done this better."

I can't answer that but I think that there are different type of musicians out there. If you look at most orchestral musicians playing in professional orchestras, they only learn what is on the paper in front of them and never venture anywhere else musically, including improvisation and/or composing. For them that is fine, they are incredible musicians but when you really look at it they are tools of the composer. I also think that composers are driven to write and its akin to a painter that constantly needs to create to fulfill that urge. Maybe Rachel is not there yet, or this is just part of her journey at the moment and at some point she will start to create her own pieces. Or maybe she has already, and just doesn't want to share them with the world? I will say that somebody with her immense knowledge of how music "works" most likely has the gift to be able to create, but some amazing prodigies (Glenn Gould, Perlman, Anne Sophie-Mutter, Sarah Chang, etc etc) also have that gift but never went down that road. This doesn't answer the question but this is how I view this situation

Unfortunately that is not THE John McLaughlin. According to his profile
My claim to fame is that I am the second jazz fusion guitarist from Whitley Bay called John McLaughlin. The other one has had (and is still having) a much more illustrious career

Incredible!!! Pardon my ignorance, but what instrument is this: "Marble Head using the Vox amp with the Lewitt mic"? I looked up "Marble Head" but I couldn't find anything.

Her "drumming" on the keyboard is more soulful than most real drummers out there. I'm not sure how she does it.

I heard she has been working on an album of originals, for quite some time already. Her mother is unable to share any of the work. I'm not sure why it seems like Rachel has been working on this project for a very long time already and not hearing anything about a release.
