I'm fucking floored,KC.
I'm glad I didn't hear any of this until now, when your emotional & physical "stock market" is rebounding from the great depression.
Love you man!

Yeah, the MH thing (that I remember well) with Mr. B & Ms. Toxic IS indeed a perfect parallel.

I was going to launch into a tirade on my late and little mourned mother-in-law, a prize-winning histrionic narcissist but it would run about five thousand words and who needs that.
I'm five months from my sixtieth birthday and am disgusted at the amount of aches/pains I've had the last few weeks. I've been battling, in fits and starts, to get back on track with fitness and damn, I'm always get side-tracked by something, particularly my goddamn back. All my exercise to strengthen my back and core get put aside because my fucking back is hurting. But at least my treadmill workout has been somewhat regular. Enjoyed a Rush playlist on my ancient iPod on my last couple sessions.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I'm going on a trial for a new kind of cortisone shots for my knees where it's meant to stay longer in the joints. We'll see how it goes, knees been giving me serious gip over the last few weeks, probably a result of my rather optimistic decision to try indoor soccer goalie again, loads od fun but not very gentle. Refereeing season soon upon us so hopefully I'll get back at that soon.

There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
One thing I've done in recent years is go light on the weights, and do lots of repetitions. The idea is to get the heart rate up. I mostly do cardio though on a stepper. Ever since my aunt passed away I'm finally living at my pace, and cooking at home what I want and not have takeout food shoved in my face all the time. My goal is to drop another 15-20 lbs. I'll get there if I stay on this regimen. On weekends of course, I enjoy my suds and a little bud.
Now I'm watching my poor mom fade slowly. I saw her drooling the other day. Broke my heart to see that.
Yeah, this is essential. I've basically given up processed foods where possible. Instead of chips, I take carrots and sweet potatoes sliced thin with a veggie peeler, tossed in olive oil and salt, then roasted at 425 (up here at 5,000' elev.) for about 18-22 minutes until crisp; they're pretty freaking great, especially the sweet potatoes. They can burn really fast towards the end so you've gotta be on it but I can whip up a batch in an hour.
Maybe I'm lucky but the small (but expensive) local market has a great selection of non-GMO, organic, gluten and lactose-free alternatives (what am I leaving out?) and I've been surprised at how much I'm loving playing with my new ingredients. Almond and (sometimes) soy milk are great for certain things, I found a non-dairy cheese that is remarkably cheddar-like, I'm using fresh and frozen fruits (smoothies) and fresh vegetables (roasting them gives great flavor) as much as possible. The gluten-free pasta is actually fine as compared to the "bread" which is totally great when toasted but otherwise not edible.
I should add that I work at home, on my own, and have a delicious, almost criminal amount of free time. Basically, all of it. I happen to like to cook so this diet change spurred on by IBS has helped me really up my game in the kitchen.
One thing I strive for is a fridge and pantry reasonably stocked (pun intended) with enough variation to make old favorites of mine as well as use in new ways, because once you're cooking you're into learning new things, new recipes. Keep every chicken bone and onion-ends, celery-stalk ends, etc., freeze them, then use them to make stock. Sound hard? 1. Throw frozen stuff in pot, fill to cover with water, place on stovetop and simmer for just a really long-ass time. 2. Strain out the crap, it's a little work but worth it, goal being a nice super-clear result. Use it and freeze some.
I find it fun to get multiple uses outta some of this stuff if at all possible. I just know that my homemade veggie stock is healthier and more authentic than the veggie stock in the can, it's gotta be.
Very sorry about both your late aunt and your Mom's slow decline. I count my blessings my parents are still going strong in their late '80s but I'm ready when the time comes, and it will. Hang in there. (hands you the LP version of Tarkus)

Kerry, all I've done is cut out starches, breads, pastas, rice and mainly just eat protein and green veggies. I like raw, sliced tomatoes, and recently discovered hearts of palm. They're high in potassium. I also discovered the wonders of Gefilte Fish with horseradish I still eat cold cuts and cheese, but no milk, or juice. All I drink at home is water and coffee. If I have any beer in the fridge it's cuz I'm using it in stews. I avoid restaurant food at all cost.
I'm not on a health food kick or anything, I just cut out pasta, rice and crap like that. If I make a hamburger I grill some broccoli and slice a tomatoe and no bread. My doctor is astonished at my weight loss and all my numbers (cholesteral, HBP, glucose) look good.
I have done the same thing with weights. Lighter weights and more reps. I was just starting to get so much pain in my joints (especially my wrists) and the lighter weights seem to help in this regard.
Sorry about your mother. I went through the same thing with mine in 2013 and it ain’t easy.
Yeah if I would have just used light weights when I started weight training 35 years ago I wouldnt have the pain in my wrists today. Back then you're ego gets in the way of excersizing for your health and it's more about impressing yourself with how many pounds you can bench press. Luckily, I have no back problems but I do feel a twinge every now and then. Really, the meat of my excersizing is 30 minutes of intense cardio. Anything after that is just for muscle tone. I've been hearing recently that older men shouldn't do cardio to burn belly fat and do weights instead. I don't buy it. I've lost a few inches around my waste from using that starmaster 3-4 times a week. It works for me.
I've noticed that, if I don't go to the gym regularly, I definitely feel it. All sorts of things are better with regular excercise, like blood tests, my wind, the strength in my legs, and my overall goodwill and attitude. Being active makes you want to continue being active, you just have to make it a priority and actually do it.
Also I've found out that when I do get hurt it takes forever for it to heal. Cuts take a long time, bruises take months.

I'm still winning the battle against type II diabetes. Was diagnosed in June 2015 and still not having to take any meds for it. In fact, at 51 years old, I do not take a single prescription medication. I keep active, I try to eat properly (and that includes portion control), and I get plenty of sleep.

I go to the Y 6 days / week. I hour walking (3miles / hour) and alternate Weights (for muscle tone = high reps / low weight) and Yoga (for balance / calming)
Yes, you definitely know when you have been away from it.
I just signed a birthday card yesterday for a woman in my Yoga class.....she is 95. The card was handed to me by a 90 yo classmate. Five women in my class are 85+.
So, I devote 2 hours / day to my health.......just about Everyone can do this......just turn off the Tube a little earlier.....
Someone posted earlier in this thread......a Body in Motion Stays in Motion. My Doc. told me.......stay out of that recliner until at least 6PM..... (a nice sentiment seldom heeded)
I just had a revelation today.......One of the YMCA's in the association (there are 7 sites) is located On the campus of the University of Washington here in Tacoma. I just went from exercising with a bunch of 85yo ladies to 18-22yo ladies.......dumbfounded to realize it took 7 years for me to figure this out!.....Doah!

Like I mentioned already, I've got some bad habits that will probably hurt me in 10 years ( or less), but the cardio workouts I hope are offsetting the damage I might be causing to myself.
I'm taking one 500mg tablet of Metformin a day now. Half in the morning, the other half at night. I don't think I really need it but when the doctor prescribed it I was 20 lbs. heavier than now. But, doctors have told me that type 2 gets worse as you age. I'm less than a year shy of 60, so .......
I know I will ultimately lose the battle but I will put up a fight as long as I can. I have been indulging a little too much in richer foods and craft beer of late, and my numbers are not as good as they were a few months back. But the summer months are upon us and I double up the physical activity..

I am the antithesis of all of you health conscious young(er) people. I'm 72, smoke both cigarettes and etc., have 2 cocktails nightly and eat like a high-schooler.
I had a complete physical 4 months ago and aside from some manageable peripheral neuropathy in my feet, calves that tighten up after walking more than 1/4 mile, and mild asthma that only requires intermittent rather than daily use of an inhaler, I was told by my primary care doc of 32 years (direct quote) "You have no right based on your behavior to be as healthy as you are". This is subsequent to open heart surgeries in 1989 and 2009.
Will I eventually pay for my lifetime of excess? D'uh! I'm not naive or stupid enough to say for one instant that I'm not living hedonistically rather than intelligently right now, but rather just pointing out that in the "casino" of life, there are anomalies.
I think on some level the fact that I feel that I've emptied my bucket list now does make me a bit more cavalier.

I am not sure about that either. Most of what I have read states that cardio gets more important as you get older and weighs less important (you are going to lose muscle tone no matter what), but I really don’t know. I have wrist pain all of the time now and often quite severe. I think it is a combination of weight lifting in some form or fashion since my early 20’s, and sports like bowling, which I was into big time for many years, and golf. Although it sounds weird the more I have learned about ergonomic issues at work, I think poor posture at my desk with my computer keyboard over the years has also contributed to some of my wrist problems. I have had some back issues too, but luckily those seem to be much better recently. Oh well……something always hurts, and that is probably just going to get worse, but exercising does make a difference in a lot of different aspects of health.
Recent studies - and my own experiences in the gym, as well as knowing several competitive body builders in their 60s - dispute that.
That said - I stopped the weights program a few years ago. I was heavily (and a bit successfully) into a bulking-up program, then decided to change it all up and train for a big mountain climb. As part of that training regimen, I started riding a bike.
Climbed the big mountain, crossed it off my bucket list, but discovered that I'm actually an okay cyclist, and stuck with it.
Today, thanks to rigorous training and a (sort-of ) careful diet, my racing results show that I'm faster and stronger than many competitive cyclists in their 30s. (Did 20 miles tonight at a hair over 18mph. Hard evidence here: https://www.strava.com/activities/929897087 ) In addition, when I race in the 55-65 "masters" events, the times and speeds are faster than the kids. Some of those geezers are stupid-fast!
In summary - I think I've proved to myself, and I've certainly seen in others, that with careful and concentrated training, older geezers can be (almost) as strong and fit as younger folks. It just takes a lot more work to do it.
I'll be 60 in 2 months, and hope I can maintain a good level of fitness for some time!

Yes but because you also smoke an antioxidant, you are somewhat free of the risk that cigarette smoking has. Dr. Tashkin at UCLA thru research contracts for the NIH, has undeniable evidence that even though weed has just as many carcinogens as tobacco and the way it's used is 10 times more concentrated, a huge number case study of folks who have smoked weed heavily for 40 years showed a slight negative correlation with cancer. Tobacco smokers of similar level of intake, have an extremely high rate of cancer independent of genetics.
What I see more often that not, are older men who don't even get free physicals because of if either laziness or an overestimate of one health based on how they feel today. On the other hand watch out for zealous doctors who want to make you a slave to Big Pharma. Note that the recommendation criteria for prescribing statins has changed since 2013 and it's not just cholesterol levels. In fact just being over 60 has more weight than cholesterol. I say fuck them, if my blood pressure is 110/70, heart rate is 46 and cholesterol is good, I am not taking statins just to increase my risk for diabetes and give me sore muscles so I won't feel like exercise. Exercise does not burn many calories, but it does support a healthy hormone system including endorphins, and healthy sleep.
Probiotics may be the most important dietary element. Yeh sugar is bad, but combined with a yeast dominant gut, you are an alcoholic and don't even know it. Potentially accumulating liver damage, and inability to deal with cholesterol.
One more thing. Just don't sit down all of the time. Standing is way more healthy. You can't undo the negative effects of working while sitting all day, with exercise.

I have found that keeping weight off is more difficult for me than taking weight off.I lost a considerable amount of weight over the last couple of years(the best thing i've done for myself, health wise) yet i see some weight creeping back on.The scale doesn't lie.The last thing i want is to go back to being the old fat me,been there, done that.I must reacquire the drive and motivation to say no to the wrong foods.I've put the kibosh on rice(i was a avid consumer of chicken over rice from a local halal cart).More brussells sprouts, broccoli and asparagus. Two long walks in the park, totaling around five miles on nice days;the gym a couple of days a week, mostly cardio, treadmill and stationary bike.
It's a struggle.I have a big appetite.Eating a bowl of broth with six croutons ain't gonna satisfy me.
Going to orthopedist tomorrow.I may have pulled or injured something in my shoulder and bicep doing weights at the gym recently.Fuck.

^ You gotta use portion control too. Have some patience too. Cut out the starches and breads, and fruit juices. Go easy on fruit in general. In a few weeks you'll see the difference. My problem is I drink beer on Friday through Sunday. If I skipped that routine for a couple weeks I'd drop 10 pounds in the blink of an eye.
Lately I've been eating a lot of raw spinach. Love it. I always eat some protein with it, fish, chicken, steak, liver, eggs, etc. I'm not "counting calories" either. Going for walks is better than lifting weights too. Stay active, and watch your portions.
