Any fans here of Anna Meredith?
She is an interesting gal I think. She started out as a modern classical composer but she switched completely electronic. Normally I am not too keen on purely electronic music but her stuff gets pretty wild at times. Enough to terrorize Ms TheDunno so it must be good. I only heared her Latest album yet "Varmits' and I quite like it.

Love Varmints. Great songs and although it often sounds poppy there is so much more going on, which I guess reflects her background as a "serious" composer.
I also really like what I have heard of her orchestral works. For example Flak, which starts with Ligeti-like atmosphere and builds up over 18 minutes to a mightly stomp with drums, electronics and electric guitar as well as the orchestra.

Here's a large orchestral piece from last year: Five Telegrams - Sender & Receiver. It was a commission for the BBC Proms, in memorium of World War I, and was written in collaboration with 59 Productions, a visual production team. The composition was inspired by a set of postcards issued to the soldiers at the front to send home, which only allowed a choice of preprinted messages. Here's a truly odd one - a concerto for amplified vocal-effects virtuoso, small amplified vocal-effects choir, and chamber orchestra. The vocal-effects guy, Simon Shlomo Kahn (AKA Shlomo), seems to either be mostly inaudible during the first half, or integrated so well into the orchestral texture that he sounds like just another percussion instrument. But in the second half, he starts to become more obvious and out-front, so do the vocal-effects choir, and the results are quite amazing.
And here's a cover of her relatively early tune "Nautilus". That piece was her first foray into pop music (or sort-of-pop-music), as opposed to formal classical composition, and apparently the result of an odd inspiration that turned out to demand a prog/indie/EDM sound, and wouldn't be satisfied with anything more tratitional. The camera-work and recording are a little iffy, but it's an interesting version: faithful to the timbres of the original, yet played entirely live without sequenced electronics.

Got the email notification this morning and downloaded the files from Bandcamp. Just made it through my first listen here, and it's really nice. Going to take several spins to get to grips with all of it, but that's half the fun!
Paramour is such a cool song.
I see the vinyl was delayed, but should start shipping around the first of November. I pre-ordered the white vinyl edition, and I'm looking forward to when it finally arrives.
Good to see that somebody noticed this was out. I need to download Varmints, and either order or download the new one.
^ Yeah, I still haven't heard Varmints, so I need to get on that. If FIBS is any indication, then I'll probably want to hear everything she does.

A slight admission, and I'm not trying to be "that" guy: I heard her music live before I heard any of her albums, so when I listen to Varmints I'm somewhat hearing it with the echoes of seeing her tear those songs apart live. I mean, "Taken" and "Nautilus" left me absolutely breathless...her energy (both hers AND her ensemble) was visibly infectious.
I like FIBS lots, and "Paramour" is a total treat...but I think the music will really click when she's onstage with her band. In fact, the last time I saw her she played a new tune (95% sure it was "Ribbons") and that tune almost immediately jumped out as a favorite just from recollecting the show itself. So yeah, I really hope she pops over for a tour soon.

It's totally okay to be "that guy" when you actually did hear the music in a live setting first!
I'd heard of her before, and had bookmarked Varmints to follow up on but never did. However, when I heard about FIBS I went and had a listen to "Paramour", and then had to pre-order the album. I shared that song with my cousin, and he said that one part sounded like "insane circus music". I think I know the section he's talking about -- not sure in what way he meant it, but if I were Anna Meredith, I'd take it as a compliment.
I hope she tours over here too; I'd love to go see her, if she plays somewhere close enough. I'd be willing to drive several hours for music like this.
A bit of a tangent here, but I saw Wilco live at the Alabama Theatre a couple weeks ago and have been on a bit of a Wilco kick since then, dusting off all my old Wilco CDs and buying the couple that I didn't have already. Their albums are almost all good-to-great (they rarely do the same thing twice in a row), IMO, but in a live setting they are on a whole other level. They've had the same lineup since ~2005, so they've become a really tight live band and it shows. Have you ever seen them?
If you ask me, they're the closest that America has come to producing another Radiohead, albeit a much more playful (and accessible) one.
Very nice! I liked that video and the use of the car wash. Kinda wonder how they filmed that!
It's really cool that there are music videos being made for music like this. Vimeo seems to be a good platform for independent filmmakers/artists.
