First Phonographic Record Played In Space

    Almost.
18 miles up is a long way from being in space. Not even halfway, boys. Now if PE sent a turntable to the International Space Station, and played a record, That would be a first. Progressive Ears : First In Space ! (first the Kickstarter, then a turntable sponsor, then approach Space X to do it -- I bet Elon would LOVE the idea !!)

And then the Big question : What to play first ????? (I say CTTE ! )

They put a man on the moon in 1969 and finally put a record player into space!? What's next? An 8 track player?

Whether or not it'll ever get played is another question. On Life Without People, they showed how there's all kinds of crap floating around in space that may eventually render the Voyager probes immobile or damage any given piece of equipment beyond repair. Which means even if is found by some extraterrestrial beings, they may yet not get to hear Chuck Berry (or Glenn Gould, for that matter).

But I feel if Chuck Berry was good enough in 1977 to be rock n roll's ambassador to the stars, I say he should hold that position. That's why it bugged me when I heard they sent, I don't even remember what it was, but it was something considerably more "modern" out on one of the radio telescope transmitters or whatever it was. Ya know, it was like Jodrell Bank or something like that.

Anyhow, someone told me once that due to the nature of radio waves, and how they keep going out into space, there may even yet be someone, somewhere, on the other side of the galaxy, who maybe is gonna get to hear Little Queenie, Roll Over Beethoven, Almost Grown, Carol, and/or You Can't Catch Me, and thus mount a expedition to reach the source of these amazing sounds.

(I always liked the SNL sketch, a couple years after the Voyager probes were launched, where they announced the first message received from extraterrestrials: "Send more Chuck Berry!")

It'd be more likely they'd say, "Send more pictures of naked people!"

They didn't include J.S. Bach on it because it would have seemed too much like boasting.

That was the Pioneer plaque, no? Carl Sagan gives an interesting account of its origin in his book 'The Cosmic Connection'. Managed to offend just about everybody in one way or another.

In the movie Apollo 18, one of the astronauts is listening to a cassette tape and through his headphones come the sweet sounds of "And You And I." Oh wait, that's fiction. Whatever, it's a cool as sci-fi flick about aliens and why we never went back to the Moon. And it's got Yes. What else do you want? Vincent Gallo?

I like that they were playing that Sagan "song".

Rumor has it that on the International Space Station, the Russians have been playing a lot of Dushanbe.
