2016 Olympics Thread - Or, Clusterfark in Rio

Opening ceremonies today so let's get this started.

And yes, the IOC is so corrupt they make FIFA look on in admiration. So there isn't much need to discuss that. It's not the athletes fault. They're in this to compete. And be objectified by half the planet.

    Let the Games begin!

I usually love the Olympics - especially the Summer Games. But this mess in Rio has me so turned off, I don't have anywhere near the enthusiasm I usually have.

I want to see good competition and records falling, but I'm also rooting for historic, colossal disaster that will force change in the way these things are organized.

    Yeah, me too.

I thought Rio is a tourist destination/resort town. Carnival and all that. How can it be such a filthy dump?

It is not summer in Rio, it is winter. The IOC has conditioned us to expect less and less from the Olympics each year. Now they have taken summer from the Summer Games. Those of us without cable TV probably won't see anything of interest. And now this:

    International Olympic Committee bans GIFs

We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973

Poverty is on the rise worldwide. Soon, the US will have its own shanty towns:

They're going to have real fun trying to enforce that.

I'll try to avoid all the powder puff human interest crap and try to see if the coverage features anything other than USA athletes. I'll definitely avoid those sports that shouldn't be there, Soccer, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, etc.

"I (seriously) got a bad feeling about this".

While I completely agree that it would be beneficial long-term for there to be a continuum of fuck-ups in Rio that would show without doubt that the IOC doesn't give a fuck about its cattle (a/k/a athletes), I would fervently hope that it doesn't involve terror & tragedy.

I used to be a big fan of the Olympics...it used to be a quadrennial must see. I don't know if it is age (get off my lawn, dammit!), that (seemingly) every Olympic hero ends up being a cheat--or accused of cheating or loses to a cheater, or that they stagger Winter/Summer games so it is now really every two years of NBCs constant Americana lovefest (and I'm American!), or that professionals and sponsors and the non-stop feelgood stories have infiltrated every pore of the coverage, but I simply don't care anymore. And that makes me a little sad.

LOL - me too. I hope everyone gets Zika. That'll show 'em!

I actually searched PE for "olympics" to ask if it's a clusterf*ck yet, and I find this thread. Let the madness begin!

I'm sorry my joke wasn't in impeccable taste. At least I didn't call the glorious city of Rio a "filthy dump." Sorry to throw you under the bus there, moecurlythanu...

You're not throwing me under the bus. My comment was accurate and was not said in jest. It's nothing for me to be embarrassed about, unlike your so-called "humor." So, "at least I" call BS.

Maybe it is just my skewed memory, but doesn’t this happen pretty much every year prior to the Olympics. I seem to remember all kinds of doom and gloom stories about the Sochi and China Olympics and they both ended up going fairly smoothly.

The entire city is a filthy dump?

Sorry if I upset anyone - I hope it's a healthy, safe clusterfark.

Welcome to the POO-LYMPICS: Raw SEWAGE pours into Rio's Guanabara Bay as athletes are warned to shower straight after leaving the water and paramedics wait on the shore to treat cuts
Pictures of raw sewage is shown pouring into Guanabara Bay in Rio increasing health risk for competitors
Swimmers and athletes who swallow just three teaspoons of water are almost certain to be infected with viruses
