Another great sub-genre is Smooth Noise. Great background for meditation, reading, conversation, etc.

    That's Eno's definition of ambient.

So I ordered a physical Dungeon Synth CD all the way from Germany - a numbered, limited edition of 100 - and it's the most physically minimal release imaginable. But it's old school, and there's a cassette version available too.

Can you please explain the appeal of something being "the most physically minimal release imaginable"? I picture this as a plain white disc in a cover with no artwork.

We didn't used to call that "old school." We called it "unfinished."

Just like the examples posted so far of Dungeon Synth are bereft of ideas.

4-panel digipak, track list on back, clear tray with minimal content inside - no booklet.

I wouldn't say the music is bereft of ideas, but this album is very minimalist. Maybe not for you.

How could my post above be from only two weeks ago? It feels like it was months... weird.

Anyway I just bought a mess o' Dungeon Synth. I find this a fun style of music, with quite a bit of variation actually. And cheap too - most albums, while short, only cost $1, many are free. And in some cases you get an artist's whole output for just a few dollars.

This guy reviews a bunch of Dungeon Synth artists -- check out his other pages Dungeon Synth reviews too:

Also, for a lovely Dungeon Synth Christmas album check out Winternight Fairytales, a split album by a couple of Russian guys.

Sequestered Keep's track is pretty cool.

Jed, if you like that kind of thing, you ought to check out the sonic stylings of DJS.

Thanks, it sounds pretty good. I'm nerdy enough to know that each track on that album is named after an Advanced D&D adventure module!

Sounds like the 8-bit computer versions people post on the interwebs. I guess I'm not so jaded yet that I can revel in uninteresting synthesizer voices.

It's done using a Commodore 64 sound chip.

Do you mean you ARE so jaded that you CAN'T revel in uninteresting synthesizer voices?

Another very nice album from the same label. This and the previous one are available on cassette as you can see, but sold out.:

I’m sorry, but are cassettes a thing again now? What’s next, black&white TV? Cars without seatbelts and airbags? Dumb phones? AIDS?

    AIDS is still a thing.

This sounds like a genre tailor made for the lonely single white guy living in mommy's basement!
