Monica Heldal - Excellent Indy Folk-Rock from Norway
Normally I don't find myself gravitating toward singer-songwriter type stuff, and folk rock can more often than not lose my interest, but I recently discovered this fine young talent who's changing my mind on that rather dramatically. Monica Heldal is a 25-year-old Norwegian artist who plays folk rock tinged with blues, a little country (minus the twang) and a smattering of psychedelia. She possesses an inviting, innocent voice that is very easy on the ears. Currently she has two albums: Boy from the North (2013) and The One in the Sun (2016). Both are outstanding, the latter IMHO being the better of the two. There's even a touch of prog in the mix as well, especially in this live video:
In an interview video posted on her Facebook site, she mentions Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left as a huge influence on her guitar playing. She even said at the end that these days she was listening to prog rock and really likes Yes' Close to the Edge (!)
