    The elephant in the room....1969....

...come on...someone's got to do it....it's screaming out to us for attention

Rider: I know very little about the psych, fusion, blues and proto-prog of the day....because my list of albums from 69 really only covers a handful of bands....as a lot of the stuff (no probably most of the stuff) in 69 really didn't and still doesn't appeal to me, and that includes albums by some of the biggest of the big names e.g. No, I don't like the first two LZ albums or the early FM, DP or JT albums.

So here is my quite short list of favourite albums from 69 then:

    Neil Young - s/t debut
    PF - Ummagumma; More
    Joni - Clouds
NY & CH - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
    C,S & N - s/t
    The Nice - Nice
    PH - Salty Dog
    MB -OTTOAD
FC - Unhalfbricking; Liege & Lief
    Free - s/t
    Santana - s/t
    FZ - Hot Rats
    KC - ITCOTCK
    Pentangle - Basket of Light
    DB - Space Oddity

We don't have to do every year. After a while, the exercise gets a bit moldy, especially since people just masturbate their lists out there with no foreplay or pillow talk.

1969 probably has the strongest top 10 of any of the years, IMO.

I could probably put these into preference order if I really tried, but they're all immortal 5 star albums, AFAIC. These are all in my personal top 50 of all time.

    The Band - st
CCR - Willy and the Poor Boys
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Flying Burrito Brothers - Gilded Palace of Sin
    Led Zeppelin - st
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
    Soft Machine Volume II
Neil Young/Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
    Zappa - Hot Rats
    Zappa - Uncle Meat

OMG!!! I'm drowning in old white bluesmen! No, sorry, with the exception of the Blind Faith LP, none of that is my bag man!

Indeed, put a gun to these threads and end this nonsense.

So tell me, how is your comment any different to people who complain about RIP threads? At least these "year" threads deal directly with music.
I'll just roll out the litany of RIP thread defenders then, shall I? i.e.. no one is forcing you to read these "year" threads. If you don't like them, don't open them.

^Well they don't 'deal directly with music' when there is no discussion, just list after list.

Lists are not what gets moldy, nor the tons of threads like this that I've already seen on PE, but in fact people get boring (me included this time) for just throwing lists without taking a little more of their time even to just 'throw' a little comment on their personal impressions about their favourites.

Yea I know it would be fair that I make it now but with a damn cell phone on my way to work is just annoyingly inappropriate, sorry.

    Well, allow me to re-state...

To clarify...I am not opposed to the threads, not by a long shot. But one of the more annoying trends on PE are multiple threads based on the same theme. Even that can be fine, but if the goal of the thread is for everyone to just make a list or spam video clips, then it takes away the discussion aspect of this site.

So consider it a challenge to make a real effort to explain why you (or anyone) really thinks that 1969 (or another year) is the peak year. This will lead to more interesting points/counter-points.

Ok well, I'll add to that. 1969 is a year that acted like the fulcrum for a bunch of styles that went to define the first half of the '70s (generally, the period of time in which many rock historians think that rock music completed its period of adding formal elements). That's why I personally find it so important and interesting of a year. It's the year that progressive rock emerged from psychedelia. It's the year that heavy metal as we know it was created (Black Sabbath recorded their first album and started performing the material in the 2nd half of 1969). It's the year that jazz fusion first emerged. It wasn't known by the public at the time, but it was the end of The Beatles. It was the year that the original Mothers of Invention dissolved. In the US anyway, this was the time of Woodstock and Altamont and all the civil/social issues going on, against the backdrop of the Vietnam conflict.

Perhaps more personally for me, it was also the year that Neil Young began what I consider to be a mostly spectacular 45+ year on-off relationship with Crazy Horse.

Of all the post WWII years ending in a "9," 1969 was the one that looks most like the end of an era, IMO, from a popular music perspective.

Well if I had to pick just one year of rock to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be 1969.

I haven't even listened to it, but hey, it's got 1969 and Elephant in the title.

I found these two to be pretty cool, just looking at the albums and realizing when they came out, and how many i liked and didn't like.
Yeah they do tend to get annoying when just letters are used to replace a whole effing name, or the lists upon lists of band names i can't even pronounce, or begin to know how or where to find them! It would be great to know where to find them. Cutting and pasting into google gets old, REALLY fast.
