    Gryphon -Mushrumps

Just purchased this yesterday and i dunno, it seems like they ran out of steam after Red Queen. Unless, a hot summer day isn't the right time to hear it. Any thoughts??

    This is before Red Queen.

Red Queen is a stronger album but Mushrumps has a bit more charm to it IMO. I really like it. But they are not for everybody.

LOVE this album man. Don't dismiss it after one spin. Wait until fall on a nice cool, overcast day and it might hit you. On some days I prefer this to Red Queen to be honest.

They did, in a way, with 1975's inferior Raindance. Mushrumps, however, is a winner in my book – not on the otherworldly Red Queen level, but then little else is!

Hearing the reformed band perform the title suite in London last year is a great memory.

It's a transitional album; they were leaving behind the trad-folk grounding of the debut (which I regret, as I loved that stuff) but hadn't yet adopted the full-blown prog-rock approach that they took on Red Queen. As such I feel it's a bit weaker than the albums on either side of it, but it's still great.

It's called MIDNIGHT MUSHRUMPS and as Jed sed, the title track is brilliant, a classic Richard Harvey composition.

Midnight Mushrumps is Gryphon's best album. It has everything.

Every time they come back to the main theme it really works, IMO.

The title track is magnificent, you are kindly asked to re-evaluate :-D

My favorite Gryphon album is "Raindance." Incidentally, I listened to their fifth and final album "Treason" for the first time this week. Now, that's the album where they lost their mojo imo.

"Spring Song" and "Flash in the Pantry" are terrific. Some of the rest may be a bit lightweight but still well worthwhile IMO.

Hadn't they lost a couple founding members by the time "Treason" rolled around?

Guitarist Graeme Taylor was the only founding member not on Treason, but besides replacing him they also changed bass players and added a drummer, moving David Oberlé to full-time singer.

I like all of Gryphon's work - including Treason, which is unfairly maligned. But Red Queen is clearly their high water mark.

I'm inclined to agree. Although I love the first three altogether.
