    Sacred choral

In 1967, Barber set the Latin words of Agnus Dei to his Adagio for Strings from 1936. He arranged it for mixed choir with the option for accompanying organ or piano. For those not au fait with the High Mass, Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is the prayer sung just before the congregation receive communion.

The reason I'm starting with this one is that I only heard it for the first time today, on the radio. I had absolutely no idea he had set Agnus Dei to his Adagio for Strings.

Here are 2 of my favourite sacred choral pieces:

Cesar Frank's Panis Angelicus as recorded by John McCormack in the 1920s

RVW's Benedicite here sung by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

I had no idea Barber had arranged a choral version of his Adagio.

I'm not usually much for choral music but that's gorgeous.

One of the few chorale works I've glommed onto over the years:

When it comes to the really old sacred stuff, I go really old.

One of the most soul-wrenchingly beautiful pieces is Allegri's Miserere. (Gregorio Allegri 1582-1652)

And Palestrina's Canticum Canticorum (Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina 1525 - 1594)

Oh yea Tallis is wonderful. Also Hildegard von Bingen.

There are no vocals here in RVW's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, but it is the most emotional and sublime piece of music I know of, that I simply have to include it here. And because it is so wonderful I post it in every suitable thread so that more and more people can experience it.
