This is odd. And the results I got searching Google were not helpful.
iTunes (on PC) will allow me to change the music on my phone (8s) but the phone refuses to acknowledge the changes. I suppose I could wipe the phone's music library and restore it the way I want but that seems a bit onerous. I've done that too many times dealing with this bloated piece of shit software.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I got it, finally. I had to de-authorize and then authorize my PC again. Why? Apple bullshit, as usual.

iTunes is BS but I've been using it so long I really don't want to change now.

I get that it's hip to hate on Apple. However, there was a time when iTunes was actually great. Over the years, they added too much to it in an effort to have it do too many things. I'm still waiting/hoping for them to release the Apple Music app for Windows, as it's only on Mac OS right now (where they also retired iTunes finally).
^^ It was great when Steve Jobs was alive and in charge.

Long-time Apple user. I never use iTunes, except for streaming progrock.com and some old-timey music.
I never use portable music, except when I'm driving.
Yes, I'm an outlier. But, I do love my Macs.
"The White Zone is for loading and unloading only. If you got to load or unload go to the White Zone!"
Mostly I agree. Although I think iTunes had already started to get unwieldy before he passed away.
Macs are great; I love them too, and used to have one myself. You're in the graphic design field, right?
I've only been an Apple user since 2004, when first getting an iPod. But I love their products, and have had great experiences with them in general.
Yep. Macs have been very good to me. I've been a user since the early 90s and have never had one die on me.

If Macs weren't so damned expensive, I'd use one. The Unix based OSX is light years ahead of Winblows.

Android can play silly buggers too - they've recently dumped Google Play in favour of a YouTube app which is designed for streaming music and doesn't want to know about the MP3 library on my phone's SD card. OK there are alternative media players but Google Play was a decent enough app for playing MP3s. Luckily I've managed to restore an earlier version but it's a PITA.
I’ve been a Mac user for so long now that it’s part of me, and for the most part works seamlessly between my MacBook, iPad and iPhone. I’m in finance but I use Mac each day for work and have done for a decade.
iTunes or the latest version is ok, but I am not that interested in the Apple Music streaming side, I have my Bandcamp account that has plenty of interesting music for that. I like to carry a reasonably comprehensive library of my old favourites in my pocket, and with current phone storage of 500gb, that’s easy to do. Even that is less needed in current stay at home times, but it does allow me to stream from my device to speakers around the house. I’ve just upgraded my phone and am in the process of rationalising my downloads / ripped collection and tidying everything up, and the app is as functional as it ever was to my mind.
I prefer Android. Yes, they have enough bugs, but the devices are cheap. The tablet is broken - you can throw it out and not fool your head. Although, in fact, Androids work well. The previous tablet lasted for 4 years. I found a new one here in the review https://homemakerguide.com/best-tablets-under-300/. I took the budget option, I don't need any bells and whistles. You don't need much to view websites and instant messengers.
I switched over to Mac in 2001 for video editing and never had a good enough reason to switch. I use a PC for email and general things. Between my wife and I at the moment, we have 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, and my 2017 MacBook Pro.
Agree that it’s “hip” to hate on Apple. I am not happy with everything they have done and definitely dislike iTunes, but consistency, reliability, and a dedication to progress (even if I don’t always agree) are what keep me coming back. I don’t hate on Microsoft either, but I don’t use their products for business.

I get the impression there is more hate for Windows, while Apple is always put on a pedestal.

I think it's always fashionable to hate who is on top and/or gets "too big". Microsoft/Windows was the original whipping boy. While I concur that a lot of Apple hate is pricing related, I think it boils down largely to how they market their brand, which tends to be with a significant whiff of superiority - and by extension that permeates from a portion of their users.

OK having said I was happy with Apple, here's a question....
I have upgraded to an iPhone 12 and I have also upgraded my MacBook Pro. I used to synch my old iPhone 10 to my old MacBook Air via USB, and then download playlists and music that I selected from the laptop to the phone. I only have rips or purchased downloads on my laptop, and nothing from the Apple Music store, I'm not interested in subscribing to that.
Now when I connect my new phone via USB, it does not show up in the Apple Music window and I therefore cannot select the playlists and music that I want to manually transfer.
Has this changed? Have I gone mad?
All help gratefully received please!
EDIT // I found there was a place that I had to tell the laptop to trust the phone, and then vice versa. Thankfully all works as it did, they've just moved things around in the new release.

As a former Microsoft Certified Professional, I can say with authority DOS and Windows has been patched together with bandaids, pretty much from the beginning. The original MS-DOS licensed to IBM was CP/M, with a few modifications. Every other major OS is based on Unix. That would include OSX, iOS, Android, Fire OS, Linux, et cetera, et cetera. Unix was created in the early days of the arpanet, so every mainframe computer could communicate. This was crucial because every early computer was a custom job, speaking its own language. More than half a century later, Unix remains the universal language of computing.
