Some albums to check out already.
I have Heatwave as a 1986 album in facts it's my favourite from that year but I'll re-check the year. I do have that David Torn album by the way, should have listed more than five for those 2 years I suppose.

This is the best, my mellostorm-man. Soon on InsideOut with Taurus pedals.

Not sure if they have another record as they disbanded soon after this one. To me they're one of those bands who were out of their time. They had a retro sound and approach that wasn't the rage in the 80s but would have fared much better 20 years later.

Now we're talking, thanks so much for this. I love Volume 7 and their latest album to a lesser extent but have never checked out their early stuff.

I checked them out on RYM and they released one other studio album right after this but apparently it's not even close to being as good. Lots of good reviews on there for Museum.

Repeating some other posters, but hey, if it's worthwhile say it again:

Neil Young - Freedom (his best since Rust Never Sleeps)
Jethro Tull - Crest of a Knave (their best in the 80s)
Fairport Convention - In Real Time (Love this semi-live album)
Prince - Sign O' the Times (One of the few Prince albums I really like)
REM - Document (The last REM album I cared about)
Roger Waters - Radio KAOS (hey, it's Roger Waters)
Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years (I prefer the other two of the trilogy, but worthwhile)
Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse of Reason (nice album, but great concert)
Robbie Robertson - S/T (one of the most underrated albums of the 80s)
The Pixies - Doolittle (worthwhile listen)
Peter Gabriel - Passion (Very unGabriel Gabriel)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - In Step (perhaps his best)
The Pogues - Peace and Love (not as good as the previous 2, but Shane MacGowan still had teeth left)
"And your little sister's immaculate virginity wings away on the bony shoulders of a young horse named George who stole surreptitiously into her geography revision."

My pleasure. There's also a "Tunedless 1" from 1980, which is also highly recommended.
