Not sure why everyone is "sexualizing" these girls. To me they're a gimmick. I guess "metal" needs a gimmick to be relevant nowadays.

I watched a few minutes. Maybe the music improves, but the Power Rangers dancing is impossible to take.

Metal doesn't need a gimmick to be relevant. It's just silly to use such a sweeping generalization like that.

Honestly, I was gonna mention that Baby Metal reminds me of Kiss. Yes really. A gimmick band.

KISS has had moments when they relied heavily on gimmicks. Yes. But that doesn't explain your view that "I guess "metal" needs a gimmick to be relevant nowadays." I can cite a slew of examples to prove that theory wrong. Some acts might look for a gimmick to enhance their live show or appearance, but those bands are in the minority -- not representative of the entire genre at all.

Surely there's metal played by actual Japanese BABIES as opposed to these girls, who are far too old?

This is all pretty bad. You all don't seriously listen to this, do you?

I posted it because someone mentioned “the Mothra ladies.” This version of “Epitaph” is by the Peanuts, who ARE the Mothra ladies!

I'm sorry but that is complete nonsense, the girls aren't "sexualised" at all and you would be wrong about their ages.

I've seen Babymetal twice and I'm going to see them again on Saturday at Wembley Arena, a 12,000 capacity venue they have sold out pretty much by word of mouth, and live they are quite brilliant.

They wear young girl dresses and dance like Beyonce's dancers in front of a speed metal band. I'm not the only one seeing it.

It's full of names probably obscure to everyone but obsessive fans of Japanese underground rock, metal, and EDM. However, the point is still understandable. Interestingly, it looks as if the music guys may be just as much hired hands as the vocalists/dancers. The article doesn't say who's actually in charge - who came up with the concept, put everybody together, signs the paychecks, and makes the real profits. Although, from what I remember once reading about Japanese pop music, there might be a reason for that: At one point in time, the whole big-time Japanese music business was run by the Yakuza, the Japanese Mob. I don't know if that's still true, or if it ever was, but I can believe it - go back to the Sixties, and there was all sorts of Mafia involvement in the US rock 'n roll business.
The three most corrupt sports on the planet are, not necessarily in this order, soccer, boxing and - go figure - sumo wrestling. I never would have thought that except with the Yakuza is involved I need say no more. Like any criminal organization, they are tough.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Great article, thanks for that link. Sort of like a Trans-Siberian Orchestra sans Christmas music(that's their niche, though, and not unlike BM in their niche) but at least we know who TSO actually is.

Now I gotta go back and watch come of these videos. I figured this thread would be more of a laugh fest. Shows what I know.

You outed me dammit. Not fair. I blame Google. How funny the net is, I never thought anyone here would even look for something like that, or if they were looking, click on it.

It was that thread that got me looking into this. The thread title got me hooked.
