    RIP Peter Maxwell Davies

I just read the news British composer Peter Maxwell Davies has died.

It seems these are really sad times for music.

About the closed Phife Dawg thread, why was it shut down just because of MY non-controversial views? Why should viukkis's view, for example, be marginalized? This makes no sense - the thread was there - deal with it.

And this thread never got any replies at all. And now it's used to complain about the shutdown of another thread?

I'm not going to start a thread about the dead of Johan Cruijff.

    JKL2000? Never heard of him.

I'm a complete ignoramus about classical but the middle section of Orkney Wedding with Sunrise sounds familiar. Was it used in some movie, or did I just happen to hear it someplace, I wonder?

Hopefully the moderators won't try to judge whether or not you're justified in starting this RIP thread.

Why, does she have a history of getting under the skin of the moderators?

No, but they sometimes try to gauge how much of a connection the poster has with the deceased, which is, frankly, upsetting. One might act nonchalant, and actually be deeply hurt.

One of Stomu Yamash'ta's earliest recording was a piece by Sir Davies. Time to dig out Dark Angels.

Didn't know that. Listening to the clip below you can tell this was before Yamash'ta expanded his instruments with keyboards.
I guess this was too experimental for the Esoteric-re-release campaign.

*Eight Songs for a Mad King
    *Vesalii Icones
Ground breaking stuff. Maxwell Davies actually died back on the 14th I see. MSM didn't pay much attention.

The middle section is an open homage to Aaron Copland and Ferde Grofe, maybe you're hearing echoes of them.

Naxos has a good series of his recordings. I believe many of these are re-issues from the Collins catalog. I like the first symphony. Simon Rattle recorded it in 1978, and Maxwell-Davies conducted another recording in 1994. This is the composer's rendition.
